SMITH marriage
« on: Sunday 17 May 09 11:46 UTC (UK) »

Hello,

I am trying to find the marrige of my Grt x 3 Grandparents John & Mary Smith. On the census John says he is from North Curry, Somerset, Im not sure where in Somerset Mary was from as she is only on 1841 census & died 1851 before the census.  Their first child Hannah was Bpt in March 1830 in Thorne Falcon, & says their abode was North Curry.  I would think that they married in either North Curry or Thorne Falcon but have been unable to find their marriage.

Any help would be good,
Thanks
Jan

Hi

Did they have any children born between 1837-1851?

If so - a copy of one of the birth certs will give you Mary's maiden name

I have tried the register office in Taunton but they cant seem to find any of the childrens births there !!!

I have been looking at the census again & on the 1851 census I found my Smith family, John with his children, Mary had died by then.  Their youngest child bpt 1850 was Fanny, born in Thorn Falcon. I have found what looks like 2 entries for  Fanny Smith on the 1851 census.....there is another entry for a Niece, Fanny Smith, living with William & Jane Napper in Thorne falcon also born 1850 in Thorne. I was wondering if Fanny has been put down twice on the Census......
Anyone have any ideas?Huh

Hi

Fanny = Frances

Births September qtr 1850

Frances Smith Taunton  10 452

I suspect it is the same child on both entries as she is 6months on each - probably being cared for by the Napper's

I have just found a Frances Smith in the workhouse on 1871 census with a baby 10 months old Harry.  She is born in North Curry. Could be her, although my Fanny Smith was born in Thorn Falcon.  I also found a marriage for a Frances Smith & Walter Perry in 1873 in Taunton Reg Dist.  But there is no sign of baby Harry on 1881 census but there are older children (12yrs old Sidney Perry, son) which I can not find on previous census. I also found a marriage in 1883 of a Frances Perry & James Chedzoy, could also be her.

I think I should get back on to Taunton Register Office & see if Frances Smith is my Fanny Smith, Im not sure if they will answer my question again, I have asked a few times today!!!

If you have to apply for the certificate to either Taunton or the GRO - you can put a condition on the application that you only want it if parents were John & Mary

Local register offices will not charge if it's a failed search but the GRO will charge a £3 search fee

I often email the Register offices with requests for BMDs & say I am looking for a birth etc & give all the details I know or think & most will email back saying they either have it with the same details or that the details I gave dont match.....

Most are very good, some wont do the search until you have sent a cheque & then they will check for you.
