Help wanted!!!!
« on: Tuesday 12 May 09 07:13 BST (UK) »

I am trying to find more information on my Great Grandparents Norman & Margaret Edge who sailed to New Zealand in the early 1900's.
I have a copy of their New Zealand Shipping Company Ltd Third cabin passengers contract ticket.
It says that the Steamship Paparoa is to take in passengers at the Port of London for Wellington on the 30th of December 1905.
They are listed as Mrs N Edge(age 31) & Mrs M Edge (age 22) on the ticket. Have looked in vain for listings for this voyage of the Paparoa, have found a listing as leaving at around the right time but from Southhampton not London. Have also tried searching English census records with no success. Have found a couple of Norman Edge's but they were married to other people.
Have also found a Norman Edge in NZ free BDM database but have no way of telling if this is the correct Norman Edge. Have been told that possibly they are buried at Onehunga cemetery but am not sure about this & can't this one online to check.
Can anyone suggest anything?

Hi Ali

Perhaps ypu might want to consider that there was a change in the Paparoa's schedule. She sailed from Plymouth on 1 January 1906 for Wellington with a Mr N Edge, a grocer aged 31 and Mrs Edge aged 22 on board.

Cheers

Welcome to Rootschat ali_gata  Smiley

Mangere Cemetery lists four Edges buried at the same location.
1937 Norman Edge age 67
1949 Mary Edge age 67
1966 Ida Mary Haslett Edge age 65
1971 Joseph Benjamin Edge age 72

The first two certainly come very close to the ages of yours.

Mangere details are not online, but you can email them and request more details.

Thanks everyone for their help. Have learnt something new, was not aware that Norman was a grocer. Have been continuing the search for both Norman and Margaret before they left England with not much success. Have found a Norman Edge from Leigh who was married to an Eveline in the late 1800's. There are names used in this family that are also used used in my Grandfathers (one of Normans sons) family. So am beginning to wonder if there is some connection there. Have had a look to see if I can find id Eveline died and Norman was married again but have found nothing. In fact can find no record at all of the marriage between Norman and Margaret Dainty(my GGrandmother) at all.
Any further suggestions would be great.

thanks again for all the help.  Smiley

In the UK 1891 census

Name Age in 1891 Gender Registration District County Birth Place Margaret A Dainty 13 F Skipton Yorkshire (West riding) Silsden, Yorkshire
Margaret Dainty 5 F Leigh Lancashire Ince, Lancashire
Margaret L Dainty 32 F Stamford Lincolnshire Coningsby, Lincolnshire
Margaret Dainty 55 F Dudley Staffordshire Monmouth
Margaret Dainty 22 F Cannock Staffordshire Staffordshire

So given the age on the ticket maybe the 5yr old is a match???

Hi, I want to thank everyone for their answers on my query.
I have since found that this was the correct Norman Edge.
He was married to Eveline Rogerson in 1982.
They had three children, John S, Oswald Rogerson and Sarah Eveline.
Eveline died in 1928 in Leigh.
Norman and Margaret Dainty travelled to New Zealand as Mr & mrs Edge on the Paparoa in 1906 arriving in Wellington.
They were finally married in 1936 in New Zealand a year before Norman died of colon cancer in Auckland. Margaret died in 1949 in Auckland.
