Police Constable in Ayrshire
« on: Wednesday 09 September 09 14:01 UTC (UK) »

Good afternoon Wise People

I've just found a relative who was a Police Constable in Ayrshire 1870s-1900s.

Everybody else in that part of the family is from Aberdeenshire, and I'm less clued in about the west coast - has anybody any experience of police history? I think I've understood that Ayrshire now counts as part of Strathclyde, and so records will be in Glasgow Archives - is that plausible?

When the forces (City of Glasgow, Renfrew & Bute, Ayrshire, Lanarkshire, Dunbartonshire and parts of Argyle) amalgamated in 1975 to form Strathclyde Police a number of records held by the various areas were handed over to the Mitchell. However the records are patchy and not every area retained the same records.
