in memory of william forbas who died ruthwell june10th 1798 aged 68 years also jean forbas who died ruthwell 17th august 1799 age 77 years this is the grave of our gggg grandfather benjamin bell does anyone know if this is benjamin or rachels sisters who is in the grave first   csc

benjamin and rachels children   richard 1777 george 1178 margaret 1783 jean 1784 janet 1787 rachel 1792  there might be more we have not found yet  we have traced all these except richard   all born ruthwell  csc

buried at caerlaverock   in memory of barbara jackson spouse to andrew davidson in glenhowan   also mary davidson     also captain william davidson who died at his residence at neptune park stewartry of kirkcudbright february 1848 aged 63 years also margaret bell wife of above who departed this life 6th december 1854 aged 71 years      margaret and william had 3 children that we know of    benjamin born ruthwell  margaret and rachel  born caerlaverock    csc

have just got the will of captain davidson from sp    1848 at kirkudbright court his money is 800 pounds  his executor is his grandson william davidson strong ship builder an allowance of 100 pounds yearly to his wife margaret his house and all his belongings to his grandson   he must have been very rich i dont know what that would be in todays money   csc

in 1817 william davidson was the master of augusta of dumfries bounf for nova scotia  csc

jean/jane bell was married to samuel chesney  stoneykirk  children agnes 1818 alexander 1820 james 1815 jane 1828 martha 1825 samuel 1822 susanna 1830   samuel in the later census is a master saddler employing a few people  martha and susanna are both single  martha is a publican in stoneykirk havent found rhe rest yet  csc

daughter janet died 1804 aged 17  daughter rachel and her husband are there also rachel died 1841 age 49 thomas boyd her husband died 1885 aged 80 their daughter mary 1984 aged 66 daughter janet 1912 aged 81 also elizabeth and rachel boyd grandaughters age12 and 6    also in that grave is janet edgar died 1826 aged 10  this janet was the daughter of john edgar and rachel before she met thomas boyd   rachel and thomas also had benjamin 1829 james 1837 william 1832  benjamin died cumberland 1914 jmes was a railway porter at dumfries 1901 and james was an estate labourer ruthwell 1901 csc

son george is my ancestor born  ruthwell with janet/anna hetherington there were several children rachel george charles janet benjamin mary ellen and richard may have been more that we have not found them we have not found birth certs for ellen and our mary some of them were born footmansbridge some stone bridge some flosh  george was a millwright/joiner csc

rachel bell was born 1799 in footmansbridge it says natural daughter of george bell/janet hetherington so they were probably not married yet none of the other childrens birth say that csc

benjamins grandson buried ruthwell  in memory of charles bell who died at plans 9th february 1868 age 48 years also janet ross his wife who died at plans 22nd jany 1889 age 72 yeas alo margaret their daughter who died 13th nov 1868 age 18 also helen their daughter who died 14th jany 1871 age 8 years also their grandson charles who died 24th may 1875 age 2 also driver john bell son of margaret bell who was killed in action in france 8th august 1917 age 21 years also elizabeth their daughter who died in ruthwell village 13th february 1930 age 83 years   csc

ruthwell churchyard  in loving memory of hector son of william pagan who died at ruthwell 29th august 1891 age 2 years also georgina bell wife of william pagan who died at ruthwell 6th april 1919 in the 63rd year of her age also above william pagan who died at ruthwell 25th june 1919 age 67 years       georgina is benjamins and rachels descendant and william is hector hetherington and janet raes  does anyone know if these 2 were related  csc

Hello CSC,
I don't know where you are but just thought I'd let you know that we used to live at Samuel Chesneys house (Rosevale, in Stoneykirk) a few years ago. I have photo's and old deeds somewhere if you are interested, although I'm not sure how far back the old deeds go. I also have traced the family through the census and I think I have a copy of a chesney will that I got from SP ,I like to know the history of where I live Roll Eyes We sold Rosevale a few years ago and it is now available as a holiday cottage!
