Devon to St Michaels, Portugal (Azores)
« on: Thursday 21 May 09 12:28 UTC (UK) »

Hi - I wonder whether anyone can shed any light on this mystery for me.....

The family I'm researching were agricultural labourers in Devon.  Their first two children were born in Devon, but the third (born in 1875) was born in St Michaels, Portugal.  They then went on to have several more children all born in Devon.

Does anyone have any clues why they (or at least the mother - presumably taking a couple of small children with her) would have made what must have been a pretty lengthy (and expensive?) journey to the Azores and then be back in Devon again a couple of years later?  I haven't found any other links to this in the family...

I'm really baffled so any clues would be welcome.

Thanks

Where exactly were they living in Devon?

It appears that there was a lot of agriculture in the São Miguel area in terms of goods that were exported to England (oranges, tea, tobacco)
You might look into seeing if there was a local landowner in Devon who also had a finger in that pie, who might have sent them.
Have you tried finding the children born overseas in the GRO overseas birth indexes?

Hi - thanks for your reply.  They lived in Eggbuckland (now part of Plymouth) and I think the farm they were working on was part of the local manor, so I'll follow that up to see if there's any connection with St Michaels.

I haven't tried to track down a certificate as it's not that I really doubt the info - it's more that I'm curious about why they would have been there.
