Hello, I'm looking for information around William Purchase, born c1790, who was living in Haselbury Plucknett from at least 1841 to 1861. According to the censuses, he was a schoolmaster and was born in Chedington. The 1841 census says that his wife is 'Maria Purchase', and the 1851 census says that his wife is 'Mary Purchase', but the ages of the wives don't appear match up (the 1841 one is very hard to read). I would like to know whether these are the same woman, or whether they are different women.
FreeBMD has this, which is possibly the marriage to the second wife:
If anybody can provide further information, I would be grateful.
If it helps, the two censuses show that William Purchase had (at least) these children: Melicent Purchase Joseph Purchase Mary Purchase Maria Purchase William Robert Purchase Jane Purchase Ann Critchell Purchase Hanah Purchase Thomas Critchell Purchase

From FreeReg William PURCHASE married Maria GALE at Haselbury Plucknett on 4 May 1832.
Going on the age of the children and the date of that marriage I would say she was his second wife. There is a death of a Maria PURCHASE in 1848 Yeovil, which covers Haselbury Plucknett, which could be the mother. Her age in 1841 looks like 39 to me.
Marriage of William to Mary HARRIS in 1849 is probably the third wife. Definitely a different wife to the 1841 one as Mary in 1851 is 41, and then 50 in 1861.
Milicent, Joseph and Mary belong to the first wife. Maria down to Thomas belong to Maria. None to Mary the third wife.
William's first wife was named Hannah. There were two Melicent Purchase baptised at Haselbury Plucknett, one in 1822 and the other in 1825, according to IGI. She was daughter of William and Hannah. Also a Mary in 1828.

From Haselbury Plucknett marriage transcripts, William was a widower when he married Maria GALE.

Thank you very much for all that helpful stuff!
By the way, I have never used IGI before. I searched for it, and I came up with the LDS/Mormon familysearch website.
Having a quick search on it, it says that William Purchase married Hannah Smith in 1814.
Clicking on some of the source links, it says that the source is:
"Patron ordinance submission sheets, 1969-1991 Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Genealogical Society"
I've heard a little bit about the odd Mormon practice of posthomously baptising dead people. I suspect that 'ordinance submission' means that this has been done to these people.
