Thompson Family Shoemakers
« on: Tuesday 12 May 09 15:40 BST (UK) »

Hi,
Can anyone help, my relatives were born in County Mayo, they are found living in Broseley, Shropshire by 1841

Mary Thompson (dont know maiden name)
Children,
Mary Abt 1826 / William abt 1826 / Michael abt 1821 / John 1817

2 of the sons are down as shoemakers on 1851 census, and Mary senior down as shoemakers widow,

any help on where to look for more information would be great, cant afford lots on pay as you go records, am subscribed to ancestry.co.uk, but not really finding anything when it comes to irish records, as they came to shropshire prior to the potato famine, trying to work out why they moved when they had professions.

Any help would be great

Many thanks

found these 1846 Thompson, Shoemaker entries in Eyrecourt.

see : http://www.failteromhat.com/slater/0016.pdf
   and : http://www.failteromhat.com/slater/0017.pdf

(the Thompson entries are on the second page)

Luke Thompson, boot & shoe maker, Market St
Wm. Thompson, boot & shoe maker, Main St

The source is Slater's Commercial Directory of 1846 - http://www.failteromhat.com/slater.php

Eyrecourt is in Co. Galway, and not that close to Co. Mayo, maybe 90km, but the two Thompson Boot and shoemakers look like a possible connection to your query..

Hi Shane,

Thanks for that but not sure if they are the same family, sorry I forgot to mention that the family I mentioned above, are also on the 1841 census in broseley, shropshire, but due to the way the entries are made it didnt say their profession, I will check out if I can find the names you gave me, came to england at a later time, do you know why a mother and children (although adults) would leave ireland at that time? would the mother of come because she was a widow?, states she is a widow in the 1851 census, but doesnt ask the question in the 1841.

Can  you get online an earlier record of trade people prior to 1941?

A couple of the brothers also married women from sligo, ireland I will try to find out their single name as I might be able to find out a connection that way.

I thank you again for your help,

Regard
Carol

it could be that the shoemaking trade ran in the extended family...

as for leaving Ireland, people had been emigrating west to the US, Canada etc for some years before the famine, and there was constant movement of people (in both directions)  between Ireland and England - not strictly immigration as we were all part of the UK then. I would think the main reason was employment.

by the way, ancestry does not have many Irish records.

The only earlier commercial directory I can think of that covers the Mayo area is Pigots of 1824, I dont know of any web version of it.
