Ellison - York/Toronto - pre1835?
« on: Tuesday 12 May 09 16:00 UTC (UK) »

My gggrandfather, William Ellison, was born in County Wicklow, Ireland c1795.  I do not know when he arrived in Toronto, but I believe I've found the death of his first wife: Mary Ellison, interred 8 July 1834, age 37 years, born Ireland. (I only know that he was married at least twice; I don't know his first wife's name.)  Christian Elizabeth Ellison, daughter of William and Mary Ellison, was interred 23 July 1834, age 4 months; she was born "Toronto U.C.".  Both were interred in the York (Toronto) General Burying Ground.

William was a carpenter/joiner and later married Jane Cullen (nee Brown) on 10 September 1839, in York.

They had several children (all born in Toronto):
Joseph, born c1843
William, born c1844
Jane, born c1847
Susan Crysandra, born c1849
James, born c1851
Elizabeth, born c1853
Sarah Anne "Annie", born 1856

William died on 12 December 1875 and was buried in St. James Cemetery, Toronto.  Jane died on 7 December 1891 and was buried with William.

I have found William's name in Toronto Directories.  A distant relative and I have researched William, but cannot find:
when he immigrated
where he lived in York/Toronto [update: shop or residence at 14 Sheppard Street]
if other family members came to Canada with him.

Any suggestions of how to proceed further would be gratefully appreciated.  Thank you for reading this long post.

Wondering if there are suggestions of where to look for additional information about William Ellison (besides trying to search for him on Canadian census.  Found on 1871 census; still searching the 1851/52 census.)

Hi Lisa,

Do you have him in the 1861 Census?  He's living in St. Andrew's Ward, in a 2 storey frame house.

Hi Karen:

Thank you very much for your reply.  I don't believe I have census returns for this family.  As far as I can determine, I've only found the family members on various websites.  Thank you, Lisa.

Karen, thank you very much for the Ellison information.

Also, thank you for the reference to the searchlab.  I had not seen that feature before.

Thank you again.  Grin
