Is Keil in Scotland
« on: Tuesday 12 May 09 16:11 UTC (UK) »

On a document I have obtained for my g.g.grandfather he gives his place of birth as Keil. I believe this could be in Scotland, his name was John Brodigan and he was born in 1848. I wonder if anyone could help me with this.

I have just typed Keil into Google earth and the nearest is Kiel in Germany.
Is it possibly Crail in Scotland,
Can you post the portion of the certificate on here and we can try and work out the place name,
do not post the whole cert as that is against copyright.
I typed in Brodigan into the IGI records and up came 17 listings, mostly Old Monkland, Lanarkshire.
kind regards,Billy.

There is a Keil at the tip of the Mull of Kintyre , just west of South-end.    Streetmap link: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=171500&Y=620500&A=Y&Z=120

Hopes this helps

John Brodigan was in the merchant navy, the document I have is from a crew list entry. His place of birth is given as Keil. I looked it up in the atlas and the only place I could find spelt in that way was Keils on the Isle of Jura. It came as a surprise to me because I had always asumed he was born in Ireland.I know he married Martha Jones in 1877 and they lived in Aberystwyth Wales where my great grandfather Thomas Brodigan was born in 1882. Thankyou for all your help Vienna.

I recon the only way to proceed is by the paid site scotlandspeople.

I've done a search for any children baptised with a surname brod*g*n - no results.

b*d*g*n only gets Bridgetowns of various spelling but one family and a Broadgreen.

Maybe we should look at the IGI records of Brodigan in Lanarkshire.
As a definite placing for the name.
It is common for people to migrate from the Scottish isles to cities like Glasgow and the surrounding areas for work.
It may also be a case of slowly working back generation by generation confirming dates etc.
There is also two for Ireland in the IGI records.

John Brodigan, d.o.b  16th June 1864.
Parents,
Owen Brodigan
Catherine Campbell.

John Hendry Brodigan
d.o.b 7th June 1867.
Parents,
Patrick Brodigan.
Margaret Rourke.

regards,Billy.

Hi,
In case the spelling was out there is a Kiel graveyard in Morvern, Argyllshire, Scotland on the mainland opposite the Island of Mull.
