Tracing Proctor / Hydes
« on: Wednesday 13 May 09 04:58 UTC (UK) »

Hi all. Attempting to trace my family Hyde who lived in Fairfield in 1800's - to date. In particular I am trying to find any references to a Thomas Hyde
(Cheshire 1835) and who married Hannah Proctor (Fairfield 1836) in 1855 and who lived in Fairfield until he disappears after 1855. He is last found on the 1851 census with the rest of his family in Macclesfield. Hannah is still listed as living in Fairfield up until her death. What happend to Thomas Hyde post 1855??

Also looking for any info on George Proctor (Fairfield 1886 who's real surname is Hyde) son of Sarah Ann Hyde (Fairfield 1857 - unmarried). George used the surname Proctor for some reason and is listed on military and census records as 'Proctor'. He died at home at 16 New High St Buxton on 4.4.1917 from wounds he recieved while serving in France WW1. There is an article in the Buxton Advertised (attached) dated 14th April 1917 on pg 4 which refers to his fathers who lives at this address. My question is Who was his father refered to in this article??

Any help would be appreciated as its hard researching from Australia. I can provide more info if required.

regards.

Lindsay Hyde

Hello,

Re  who was the Father at 16 New High Street, Fairfield Buxton.

I notice that up until the 1901 Census George Hyde born abt 1886 uses the surname Hyde.  It is only
in the 1901 Census when he is living with Francis Proctor that he adopts the surname Proctor.

Have you checked the 1911 Census to see who was living at 16 New High Street - this may give
some indication.  Perhaps when he died he was still living with Francis Proctor and it was assumed by
the newspaper that this was his Father.

Hi spendlove...thanks for the reply.

I have checked the 1911 cencus for 16 new high st Buxton and no sign of george proctor, in fact cannot find george anywhere. But the 'Eperson's' are listed as living there at 16 New High St, along with Sydney Proctor listed as 'Son' of Edward Eperson' on 1911 census and who are also listed in the 1901 census. But Sydney is listed in 1901 as the grandson of Francis Proctor ...confusing.

I have searched for Francis Proctor, widower, in 1911 census and he is listed as living at 61 Queens Rd Fairfield, Buxton with a family called 'Findlow'.

Maybe George was away somewhere at the time of the 1911 census.

Any suggestions on finding george in 1911. I hav also searched for George Hyde in 1911 census...no result.

Hi,

Entries for people in the Census and their relationship is always to the head of the household.

So that Sydney Proctor in the 1901 Census is show as the Grandson of Francis Proctor, however by 1911
Sydney is living with the Eperson family and is shown as son of Edwin Eperson.  You will probably find that
Sydney Proctor, his birth is registered March Q 1898 Chapel le F (Chapel en le Frith) 7b 847, is the
illegitimate son of Emma Proctor, dau. of Francis Proctor, who married Edwin Eperson June Q 1900.  The
only way to prove this is to purchase the birth registration certificate.

Agree that George Proctor born abt 1886 appears to be away from home in 1911 census, there are a number
of possibles born 1885/1886 living in Yorkshire and Staffordshire.  But perhaps you have already purchased
full access to these.

Hi spendlove.

Thanks very very much for your help and advice. I'm relatively new to this family history thing and taking on the challenge on behalf of the Hyde family!.

What you say does make sense and give me a great piece of advice in putting dates together across births and then marriages....I'm finding that there was a fair deal of illigitimate births during these times...must be the weather over there in England and more time spent indoors!!

I'll obtain the birth cert of Sydney Proctor/Eperson and hopefully shed some light on same. I am still very curious to find George Proctor around the time of 1911, 4 years before he enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters...I will keep searching..I have full access to the 1911 census and ancestry.com...so will keep trying. I'll check the proctors listed from Yorkshire & Staffordshire on your advice.

I am still wondering what  the connectiopn for George (son of Sarah Hyde - but cannot find a birth entry for George) to use the surname of Proctor rather than Hyde was? Any clues? Would appreciate a bone in this regard to chew on and serch for!!

Regards.

Lindsay Hyde
