SQUANCE family motto - Cunning & Clever

In 1881 she is shown as a servant, (Polly was often a diminutive term used for Mary) presumably with relatives as other children are described as grandchildren of the head of household:

This same Elizabeth BATTEN is shown in 1861 as an unmarried pauper living at Derril with her name shortened to Betsy. In 1851 she is shown, unmarried with a 5 year old son William.
Have you obtained Mary Ellen's birth certificate to determine if the above Elizabeth Jane is her mother? Alternatively, her marriage cert will give her father's name if known.

On the 1881 Polly is actually Polly SQUIRES, serv, 17 b Pyworthy
She has been transcribed as Batten, but the original states Squires.

I see them in 1901 living in Cornwall ...I am trying to work backwards as I cannot see Ellen Mary or vice versa in earlier censuses ... do you have the marriage cert?
