Please help unravel the COSTA/ERS! Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire
« on: Friday 17 July 09 21:06 UTC (UK) »

This is a message of despair!
PLEASE can anyone help with the complicated Coster family, who seemed to have a knack of leaving confusion in their wake!
I have been in contact with descendants of the Costers and apparently some people have been trying to work out the connections for 30 years!  I dont have 30 years! I am getting on and want to complete my family tree so I can hand it down!!!
The records seem to run like this

Alice Coster ( my great grandmother 1851 -1890) married Abraham Hall. Born Mill End Hertfordshire

Henry Coster Rickmansworth 1820 married Charlotte Sills 1821-1877

Thomas Coster born Iver  1794 Buckinghamshire married Hannah Elland
Soloman Coster  20th Nov 1768 married Mary Mead and had numerous children

Now THIS is where it gets confusing.

Solomans Father was Benjamin Coster.
We have a Benjamin Coster who was Solomans father who died in 1768. He married a Mary unknown. There are no previous records.

This Benjamin married a Mary in or before 1750. Their first child was christened in Sarratt on 14 October 1750. They had Mary (1752), Moses (1755) and Martha (1757) in Sarratt and then moved Rickmansworth and had John (1759, James (1761), Thomas (1765), Christopher (1766) and Solomon (1768). We got these details from the parish records for Sarratt and Rickmansworth. There is a note in the Sarratt parish records that they did not keep marriage records for 22 years. We believe that Benjamin married in Sarratt in that 22 years.

MEANWHILE in Oxfordshire there is a large family of Costers who lived in Garsington and Benson. I wont list them all but there was a Benjamin who married a Mary in Oxford St Cross on 4th Jan 1755. They also had a daughter called Mary, but I have spent several days at the Oxford record office and have not traced them after that. My question is are these two Benjamins related?? I hope so!! It would make life just so much easier!!
Did any of the first Benjamins relatives/ancestors come from Oxfordshire area?
I wont list the complicated family list for the Costers but will a  file from Garsington to anyone who asks, I just havent worked out how to post it on this massage baord yet. We have Marys, Benjamins, Thomas's the same names circulating round. You can see that this family just kept on sticking to the same names and its a nightmare to unravel  Roll Eyes. If anyone could link these two sides of the family via the Benjamins you would make a lot of people very happy!
Any assistance REALLY APPRECIATED!! Kiss I want to finish this in my lifetime!
Many thanks
Pam

Thanks, I have sent you a personal message. One thing I dont lack is Costers...................I am working on the theory that they moved with industrialisation.

I suppose I had better name a few of the Oxfordshire ancestors...................here goes

It runs backwards thus

Benjamin Coster...as above Garsington born 1728 died ? and where?

John Junior Coster Garsington 1685-1763 WIFE NK

John Costard 1659- 1732  Garsington married Mary?

John Costard 1639-1687 Garsington married Amy who died in 1713

John Coster  1596- 1679 from Benson  (Bensington) married Alice Long

Thomas Coster  Benson 1570 -1618 married Katherine (Costerd) buried 18th July 1635

Andrew Costard who married Margery..................things are getting a little vague!! Roll Eyes

What is it with the Coster name that causes problems? I'm cursing them too. I need to find a birthplace for Joseph b 1789  or 1797 depending on which document is used, married Sarah...... b about 1798, first child is born Marylebone 1821, she dies late 1841 him 1849 with a Hannah Coster present at death (no idea how she fits) . Grateful for any help. 1841 census just shows birthplace for J & S as not Middx

Pam

I can help you with the Costers in Rickmansworth, Chorleywood and Sarratt. I am descended from Benjamin and I have Alice on my tree but I do not have any details of who she married and her descendants.

I have found Benjamin's parents, they were William Costern and Elizabeth Baldwin and married in 1709. William christened 5 sons and his daughter in 1721, Benjamin was the youngest. I have attached a photograph of the parish register for that christening.  The entry starts 5 lines from the bottom and lasts 4 lines. Very unusually their dates of birth are also given.

It looks as though you are quoting some of my findings in your note.

Can I correct one record - Thomas was born in Rickmansworth and not Iver.

I have found 4 christenings in Rickmansworth in 1684, another Coster who had a block booking for a christening. None of the children were William and the surname was Costard. There were 2 other Coster/ard marriages around 1709 so there maybe a family there.

If you would like to exchange information please send me your email address on the personal message system. I am starting to scan all the information I have found, at last, and can let you have a copy if it heplps you.

I am not sure if there is any link to the Costers in Oxford. Rickmansworth and Sarratt are close to both Buckinghamshire and Middlesex and I suspect I might find part of the family originating in those counties. Given we are getting back to the late 17th century and have only another 100 years or so to go back to when records started I doubt I will find a link. I could be proved wrong!

Graham
