Hi I have only just started on my Family Tree and would appreciate any help in trying to trace my grandfather John Buckley, born in Cheshire about 1879. His father was James and John married Mary Hannah Parry in Davenham Cheshire in 1907. They had 3 children Eva, Fred, and Eric. Thanks

Hi outinthesticks
Welcome to Rootschat
What was the occupation of John's father James, as I presume you got the info from John's marriage certificate?
Any info would help as there are a few John's with father's called James in Cheshire in the 1881 Census.
Wendy

Was going to ask the same as Wendy for the same reason.
There is a John Frederick BUCKLEY born 1880 Odd Rode, whose parents are James and Mary. In 1881 James is a labourer. By 1901 James is a carpenters labourer, and John is a painter. Age is about right.

Hi Jan & welcome to RootsChat
I've had a look at 1911 searches & I'm only getting one matching John Buckley where there's a Mary Hannah, which is in Northwich district and he was aged 37 (ie born c 1874) - I wonder if this was "diplomacy" to make him nearer to her age or whether the age at marriage was wrong? Mary Hannah's age was given as 41 which matches with age at marriage and a birth in Middlewich, per CheshireBMD

If it is the above, here is his Christening record:
John Frederick Buckley
~~~~~~~~ Event(s): Birth: Christening: 09 APR 1880 Odd Rode, Cheshire, England ~~~~~~~~ Parents: Father: James Buckley Mother: Mary Buckley
Did he have a younger brother called Norman (Christening: 24 AUG 1882 same parents) Odd Rode, Cheshire who died in Crewe end of 1957 or start of 1958?
Thanks Ian for all the info. John seems to have always worked on farms, but my eldest brother remembers my mother saying that Hannah's family disowned her when she married John as he was socially "beneath her" and they ended up at Hale in Merseyside and John worked as a beachcomber for Lord Derby. Hannahs parents died before she married John so possibly they made a will disinheriting her if she did marry John. Rather intriguing Jan
