I have just ordered the marriage certificate of 'William Henry Major' (born 1884 in Curragh Camp, Kildare) and 'Mary Winefred O'Neil'. They were married in 1903 Chorlton.
I too believe that his Father 'William Major' (born c.1859) and Mother 'Ellen Brennan' were married in Ireland. I will see what I can dig up about their marriage. I would like to know when William moved to Kildare, so will get my thinking cap on!
Once I have the two above marriage certificates I can confirm names, as from what I have read with all of your help is that William senior's Father could well have been another William!
How do you search for births/marriages pre 1837 as this is not possible of FreeBMD?

Sorry, yes in my first post that's me getting confused!
'William Henry Major' junior (born 1884 in Curragh Camp, Kildare) married 'Mary Winefred O'Neil' in Chorlton 1903.
'William Major' senior (born c.1859) married 'Ellen Brennan' somewhere, probably Ireland.
I have done searches on 'www.brsgenealogy.com' which searches all of the counties and nothing came up for a marriage. I used this tool to find 'William Henry Major's birth in Kildare' and his sister 'Elizabeth Annie'.
Sorry to confuse you, I'm confusing myself enough!

Seems like William senior might have been in the army, that would account for being in Ireland You could try for his army records, they can be very informative.

Wow, great thinking, I will look into the possibility that he could have been a protestant.
I found a 'William Major' on that link that you provided Sandy (thank you very much for that). I don't seem to be able to see an Ellen Brennan married within the same date range and place as William. I will look into having a GRO search done.
I have contacted Julie on genesreunited (thank you for that advice). So hopefully I can either track or eliminate that William Major.
I have learned for much from everyone helping me here, very rewarding - thank you!
If you can think of anything else worth trying, let me know. And I'll update this as and when I find further information.
