Allenvale Cemetery ?
« on: Thursday 21 June 07 13:36 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone please tell me where Allenvale Cemetery is? Do you know if it can be checked on line?
I am looking for details of a James Saint Jnr, who is buried there.
According to the Shore Porters book, His headstone is one of the largest pieces of Victorian extravaganza in the cemetery.
James Saint Jnr had drapers shops 171-173 Union street Aberdeen and warehouses in bridge street and woolmanshill.
I would like to find this grave to record any details of relatives hopefully mentioned on it.

Allenvale cemetery as far as i know is the one on Riverside Drive on the banks of the Dee. HUGE memorials in there of VERY famous people...all the most important ones are lined along the river.

Aberdeen City Council Environmental Services
Dept., St. Nicholas House, Braod Street, Aberdeen, Scotland AB10 1BX

If you contact them with the actual date of death & name of your ancestor and any other relevant information, they perhaps will send you a map marking the location of the grave .

I have found that they are most helpful.
They might even be able to give you any other names on the gravestone.

Hi Dottie, So sorry the weather was so bad, it was good of you to try and find the grave in such weather. here is what I know about James Saint,

he died 1890. He lived at 11 Queens Rd Aberdeen.he was married to Jeannie Johnston,
This extract was from the Shore Porters book. His father was James Saint a Shore Porter.
His son,
James Saint Junior, founded the well known Aberdeen drapery firm which bore his name, His first business 139 Union St in 1847, by 1870 he had acquired more shops 171- 173 Union St,  he was one of the original promotors of Aberdeen tramway Company, formed in 1872.
His headstone in Allenvale, if not the most ornate, is certainly one of the largest Victorian extravaganza to be found in any Aberdeen cemetery.

Many thanks again, regards Yonder.

Hi Yonder.
Success I found the monument,I have attached 2 photo's if you want the rest(14) I will e-mail them to you, The stone reads as follows

Sacred to the loving memory of James saint merchant aberdeen
submissive to his redeemer and inpeace
he died on the 22nd feb 1890 in the 70th year of his age
And of his wife jeanie johnstone who died on the 29th march 1913
interred at rusthall turnbridge wells
I know that my redeemer liveth.

This monument was john pirie's the famous architect's last work and  is also a listed building in aberdeen.

If you have not seen the house that was built for james you could google the sportsmans club aberdeen & it will show you a picture
I hope this info helps with your research

Thank you Dottie so much, for your time and effort,
I am thrilled with the photo's, and I have googled and found 11 Queens Drive, James Saints home. What a beautiful house.

I would love to have the other photo's, can I put my email address on the board? or is there another way I can do it?
Thank you once again,  Yonder.

Went there once on a lovely sunny day hoping to locate a grave,& discovered the most BEAUTIFUL but HUGE cemetery & wondering where we would start our search.Fortunately for us there were 2 gravediggers working & they took us into a small builing & there in the cupboards were various records & maps of the cemetery, they showed us records going back many years of the  burials & we were able to locate exactly where my husbands Grt grandfather was buried.Couldn't believe that those valuable records were just lying in a dusty old cupboard.
We didn't want to leave it is a lovely place,we spent a long time just strolling round looking at lots of graves.

In another post re Allenvale Cemetery, someone remarked on the difficulty of parking a car in the vicinity for the period of time it would take to have a proper look around the various headstones.  I would suggest that intending visitors go to the Duthie Park Car Park in Riverside Drive and park their vehicle in the far west end of that car park.  It is then only a short walk to the cemetery.
