Rathen Games - any information?

Hi

In the papers of my grandfather (John Simpson, b Rathen 1868) I came across a medal from the "Rathen Games", with the inscription "JS", presumably John Simpson. See photo.

I know that John competed successfully at the 1890 Buchan Gathering in Mintlaw, so I'm guessing that the Rathen Games was some sort of local athletics event, but does anyone out there have any other information, or can suggest where I might find out?

The Local Studies part of Aberdeen Central Library hold microfilm copies of the Aberdeen Journal - they can be emailed at localstudieslibraryATaberdeencity.gov.uk (change the AT to @) and see their website for further information.

Also, the Aberdeenshire Library Service might be able to help with the Buchan Observer.  Their website has information and contact details.
