Help - could SMITH be SMITHERAM ?
« on: Wednesday 13 May 09 15:55 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Have been trying to find James Smith b1844/1848 Cornwall on 1851c, 1861c & 1871c for a long while without any success.

The only time a placename given is on 1881c RG11 5292 /41/13 where is says Drouth - have been told this could be Redruth  Undecided

Have traced James in St. Nicholas, Glamorgan Wales on 1901c age 56, 1891c age 45, 1881c age 37 to his marriage in 1880.

His fathers named on the marriage certificate is Thomas Smith deceased occ. miner. James Smith has the middle name of Henry (this is only on his marriage certificate) age 32 occ. haulier and x (mark) by his name.

On OPC site for Cornwall I searched for James SMITH name of father Thomas SMITH the only one with close enough birthdate was Breage  29/5/1844 but the surname is SMITHERAM  the father named as Thomas miner mother Anne - would this be feasible  Huh

Did another search with just surname of SMITHERAM father Thomas mother Anne it came back with a Thomas b 2/7/1824 & Elizabeth 29/5/1844 bit of a large gap if Thomas is their son.

On FreeCEN

SMITHERAM family paupers 1851c HO/07/1915 Redruth Union Workshouse
Mary Ann age 30 widowed mine woman, James age 7 & Elizabeth age 7 the childrens ages fit with records above would presume this is the same family  Undecided

I'm hoping that James was still alive in 1911 and when the Wales counties are released this may give me more of an indication as to where in he was born in Cornwall.
