There is no sign of anyone with a name like that being born/christened in Midlothian at all for that period on Scotland's People.
Given that the chapel had been in use as a gunpowder store for 2 centuries and was only renovated for use in 1845 (according to Canmore) a baptism there in 1844 was less likely, so you may need to slightly adjust your date.

Sorry I haven't been able to help more.

It is possible that she was baptised there, it's just that it might have been a year or two later than you thought.
Is it possible that she was registered under another name, but known by a nickname or middle name?

I was wondering the same thing. I have been hunting around but it's not that easy to find out much about the current workings of the chapel. Maybe try contacting Historic Scotland as they are responsible for the building (and Edinburgh Castle itself).

Hi
If the person concerned was English the family were probably Anglicans so would they have been baptised in the Church of Scotland? If not then that might explain the absence from Scotland's People. I'm no expert but it might be something to consider as a possible complicating factor.

Hello
On some advice from a fellow Member........
Full story of the Chapel by the Minister of the Canogate Parish, now deceased, can be found at http://www.qmssa.org/chapel
It's possible that if the Baptism didn't take place in the Chapel itself during 1844, that it would have in the other chapel inside Edinburgh Castle?
Also, the Baptism record may be retrievable from the Canogate Parish Church?
Cheers

If the child was baptized in the Canongate Kirk or by its minister, the baptism should be available on the Scotlands People website along with all other baptisms for that parish. However Edinburgh Castle in the 1840s was usually garrisoned by English or Irish regiments. (This is clear on the 1841 Census) I do not know whether the Army at this date provided chaplains for these troops - if they did that is another avenue to be researched. If they did not then anyone wanting to have their child baptized under Anglican rites - as is likely with English families - would turn to the Scottish Episcopal Church. Next time I am in the Edinburgh Central Library - probably the middle of next week - I will have a look at a reference volume on the Scottish Episcopal Church to see if any of their churches in the area had an arrangement to serve the troops in the castle.

Hi, My grandad was in the Royal Scots Greys stationed at Edinburgh Castle in the late 1928/30 and they marched down the cobbled street to the local (I think it is a Cathedral) where they have the flags of every battalion that fought in ww1 & 2. I do not remember the name of the kirk but maybe this is what she meant and maybe KirstyG could tell you the name of it. A lot of people consider that this kirk belongs to the castle. Perhaps she is confused and thinks it is within the castle grounds instead of just a little walk away from it. marcie

The Church to which Marcie refers would probably St Giles Cathedral.
http://www.stgilescathedral.org.uk/
The Episcopal church was suggested by Jessie, and there does seem to be a suggestion here that it is worth looking for records from there, possibly from St George's in York Place.

Ironically the building which used to be St George's Church is now a casino

Hi All
There is a fairly comprehensive tree on Camelia and family on Ancestry.
It shows Camelia's parents as William Hunter and Barbara Banks. This is the entry included for the 1861 census in Bingley, Yorkshire:
William Isaacs 22 Camelia Isaacs 17 b. Edinburgh Barbary Hunter 41 mother b. Edinburgh
RG9; Piece: 3221; Folio: 88; Page: 29;
The marriage for Camelia to William Francis Isaacs is given as 31 March 1861 in Bingley.
Barbara Banks father is showing as John. She married William Hunter on 6 Aug. 1838 in Edinburgh. This is confirmed on IGI where the marriage entry shows as actual extract from the register. The image for this entry is available to view on the pay to view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Barbara is showing as having died on 26 August 1891 in Salford Lancashire.
Census entry from 1891 in Salford:
William Isaacs 51 Camelia Isaacs 44 b. Edinburgh Henry Isaacs 23 Walter Isaacs 21 Alfred Isaacs 12 Frances Isaacs 8 Elizabeth Isaacs 16 Camelia Isaacs 14 Florance Isaacs 11 Barbara Hunter 70, mother in law b. Edinburgh
RG12; Piece: 3221; Folio 91; Page 38
There are no further details showing for Barbara Bank's family or for William Hunter, except his occupation is showing as a carver and gilder (probably from the 1838 marriage entry or perhaps 1841 census?).
Monica
Added: Gilly, I've just noted the original date of your posting. It may be that the tree now showing is your friend's with all new info that has been added since the beginning of the year....I hope so
