STOREY family Hemingford Abbots
« on: Thursday 14 May 09 03:55 UTC (UK) »

If anyone is researching the Storey family from Hemingford Abbots I would be happy to share information.  Particularly interested in Thomas Bland Storey (1795), his father Charles Storey (1754) and any earlier members of the Storey family

Hi wjhall and welcome to rootschat

I can't help you with Storey family info unfortunately but may I suggest that you check out the RC Surnames pages, the link to which is at the top of this page, 4th button from left.   You can also add your names there and hopefully other reseacrchers wil find you that way.

Good luck,
charlotte

What are you looking for relating to the two names you mention?

Thomas was my Gt Gt Granfather and Charles my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather. I have quite a lot of information coming forward from Thomas but have no information on any siblings he might have had. As regards Charles all I know is approx date of birth but don't know if place was Hemingford Abbots. Also I would like to trace back further from him if possible. Any info you might have would be very gratefully received

There’s only one Charles Storey marriage in Hunts Marriage Index prior to 1795 – in 1784 in Wyton to Mary Ashwood. The IGI shows this marriage as being in Houghton on 11 Oct 1784, which is odd.  Houghton and Wyton are adjacent parishes. The IGI has extracted baptisms of Charles Bland Storey in Houghton on 24 March 1791 (yet the BVRI shows this at Holywell cum Needingworth), and of Thomas Bland Storey on 12 Sept 1795 at Hemingford Abbots (“HA”), both with parents Charles and Mary, which fits. I can’t see any other children baptised to this couple, but that doesn’t mean a lot in Hunts where so many parishes aren’t extracted onto the IGI or BVRI. Marriage in 1784 and first child baptised in 1791 seems too big a gap.

Other Storey marriages
in Houghton:
27 May 1799 William and Mary Bayley

in Hemingford Abbots
24 Nov 1814 Thomas and Elizabeth Marriot
5 Dec 1821 Joseph and Elizabeth Walker

Also baptising children in HA from 1795 onwards were Thomas and Hannah Storey.

Interestingly an Ann Bland Storey, daughter of John (no mother mentioned) was baptised in HA on 12 Feb 1794

I can’t find a baptism in Hunts for Charles Storey prior to 1779. But there is a marriage at Stilton in 1750 between Thomas Story and Ann Bland. Stilton records are on neither the IGI nor BVRI but there is a transcript available from Hunts FHS. There were burials in Stilton of Ann Story on 13 Oct 1752 and of Thomas Story on 11 Sept 1773. These were the only Story burials in Stilton in the 1700s. Just about time for one or two children to have been born 1750-52. Stilton is the haystack where I would start the search for the needle/Charles’ baptism.

Must dash as I have an important meeting in a few minutes with a barman

David,

Many thanks for all the information. It has given me several facts that I was not aware of and enough leads to do plenty of digging.

I was particularly interested in the Stilton wedding of Thomas and Ann Bland. The Bland connection has always puzzled the family since right up to c1900 nearly all the Storey children had Bland as a middle name.

Hope the barman was welcoming!

Thanks again

Hi Bill

I have researched the Storey's of HA but not for several years and then not in great detail. I'm descended from the Thomas and Hannah that David mentioned. However I didn't find any ancestors of Thomas nor a link to John or Charles (and Mary) who both had connections to the name Bland through their children's middle name.

The earliest I found in HA where a John Story who married Catherine Markham in 1701. They had at least one child (Sarah) who died as an infant, along with Catherine in 1708. John died in 1735. There was also an Elizabeth who married a Robert Carless in 1732 who could have been another child. Other than that there is a gap before the baptisms start in 1794. There is a similar gap in the burials index.

Hope this helps.

Michael
