Lost - Two VIMPANY Brothers
« on: Thursday 14 May 09 12:19 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to trace two brothers, John and Edmund Vimpany, after the 1851 census.

Here is what I know about them.

1841 census HO/107/956/6  - West End Nailsea

Thomas Vimpany 30 ag lab
John 10
Edmund 9
Charles 6
Elizabeth ?mths         All born in county

HO 107/939/1 - son Henry aged 3 is with his grandparents
John Vimpany 60 ag lab
Elizabeth 70

1851 census HO/107/1946

John Vimpany Head 76 ag lab
Elizabeth wife 84
Lucy Cox dau 46
John Vimpany 19 ag lab
Edmund Vimpany 18 ag lab
(there is also at Wall End an Edward Vimpany servant 18 ag lab - I think this is a double count)

Thomas’s wife died in 1841 as did his 11 year old son William.  Daughter Elizabeth died in 1842 and son Charles in 1847.  Thomas and Henry emigrated to the US arriving in New York in May 1849 leaving John and Edmund with their grandparents.

But I can find no further trace of John and Edmund after the 1851  - any ideas would be welcome.

There is a marriage for Edmund Vimpany Q4 1853 Monmouth 11a 35, with possible spouses Frances Elizabeth Cook or Eliza Heath

Thank you for your reply - the Edmund you have found is a distant relie of the other Edmund but sadly, not the one I am looking for.

I'm thinking that maybe it would be odd for the father and youngest son to emigrate together.  The older two boys would be expected to be more adventurous.

Is it possible that they had already emigrated to make a home for the others coming later.

Not really because father Thomas emigrated in 1849 and John and Edmund were still in Nailsea in the 1851 census.  I can't find any trace of them emigrating after 1851 but neither can I find them in the 1861 census.

I would have thought it likely that they would have followed their father to the US but Thomas re-married in the US and had another family and I can't find any trace of these two brothers.
