I am trying to find information about my 3rd great grandfather, Archibald McLean and his spouse Annie Brown. The only information I have was taken from the census records. I can't find them anywhere in the Islay OPRs.
Archibald was born abt.1814 in Kilchoman parish, presumably Port Charlotte. He was a tailor by profession (1841-1881). At the time of the 1881 census he was living at Shore Street, Port Charlotte, but I can't find any record of him thereafter.
His wife, Annie Brown, was born abt 1815 in Kilchoman parish. She is living with her husband in the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census records but I can't find any record of her thereafter. I can't find a marriage record for the couple.
I know of two children, Annie b. abt 1851 in Port Charlotte and Margaret born abt. 1855. Annie died in Glasgow on 28 Feb 1915.
Any additional information would be greatfully received. Regards Stewart

Holy Island - Pilgrims' Path

Hi Stewart
I've found the death of Ann Maclean (m.s. Brown) in Port Charlotte on 29 March 1884, aged 73, widow of Archibald Mclean, Tailor.
Her parents were - John Brown, crofter and Mary, m.s. Sinclair, both deceased.
The informant was a neighbour - Archibald McLean
I assume that Archibald died 1881-1884 but so far I've not found the death.
Regards

It looks as if Archibald died in 1881:
May 31 1881 Archibald Maclean, aged 67, tailor, married to Ann Brown. Port Charlotte.
His parents were - Alexander Maclean, Tailor and Margaret, m.s. Maclean, both deceased.
Margaret Mclean, daughter was the informant.

Hi Stewart
Did you have Archibald in 1841? It looks as if this might be him with his father. His mother had, possibly died.
Port Charlotte, Kilchoman Parish 540 ED 6 P 18
McLean Alexander, 55, Tenant Archibald, 25, Tailor Mary, 20 Isabella, 15 Donald, 55
All b. Argyll
Note on the 1841, ages of those of 15 and over were usually rounded down into 5 year age bands. Thus 55 = 55-59, 25 = 25-29, etc.

Thanks once again, Gadget. Yes, I was aware of the 1841 census record but couldn't confirm it as I had no other family information. Now you have given me the name of Archibald's father, I think I can now confidently include the record in my data.
I assume that the other named household members are also family members - siblings and uncle perhaps?

It looks as if they probably are - worth you following them up in the later censuses.
I couldn't find Alexander on the 1851 so assume he must have died.
Couldn't find a marriage for him and Margaret either

Hi again
This might well be their marriage with a possible mistranscription:
IGI (extracted)
8 March 1849, Kilchoman, Argyll
Ann Brown and Archibald McLergan
It might be worth checking the original entry on SP. It's down again

Hi Gadget, I really think that you might be on to something here. I too wasn't aware of the McLean/McLergan link. I found another thread where Sue Visser who has been involved with the transcription of many of the Islay BMDs confirms something similar:

I will go and look for the name McLergan now. Many thanks once again. Stewart
