Thomas Robertson
« on: Thursday 14 May 09 16:25 UTC (UK) »

I'm trying to trace Thomas Robertsons family or any information about them. He was born in 1940, 24 Broad Street Campbeltown to parents Thomas and Mary(nee Hunter). he may have a brother called William and other siblings. Thomas left home quite young and went down to Corby to work, he met his partner in the area and went on to have 6 children. One of these children is my friend and I am trying to help her piece together her family history as her father died when she was only 5 and she knows nothing of his family. I hope someone can help me as I am struggling to find any information.
Thanks Ros

Hi there,
I think I can give you some info that may help. My husband was born in 24 broad street and he does have an older brother named Thomas. There were a total of 8 children (4 Girls 4 Boys) but none were named William. However Thomas did not leave Campbeltown and still lives there today. So perhaps you have some incorrect information. His uncle also named Thomas lived there, but was a bit older ( he served in WW11)
The family lived in broad street for a considerable time, they gave the property up in the sixties, all the siblings except Thomas moved away. Hope this is helpful.

PS the houses in Broad street were demolished early this year.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure what is going on! The birth certificate says Thomas McMuctire Robertson born in 24 Broad Street to Thomas and Mary(nee Hunter)Robertson. Can you confirm if your husbands parents names are the same? I have been unable to find out anything so far, although I was briefly in contact with a woman called Martha, her father was called Peter Robertson, she also lived in Broad street in the 60s. It seems Robertson is a common name! My friend says her Dad died in the early 1970's and he was about 35ish maybe younger. I feel there is something very strange going on here as there doesn't appear to be any information on him other than the birth certificate.  Perhaps they were no longer living in Broad street by the 60s?  My friends sister made contact with a man a few years ago who was living in France at the time, he claimed to be Thomas' brother and was traced through a newspaper in Paisley but he didn't keep contact and my friend isn't quite sure what his name was but thought it could possibly be William, perhaps that is wrong. Anyway I don't know if you can be of any more help, but if you know anything or have any ideas of where I should look next I would be immensely grateful. Thanks Ros

Right I think I might have found something! Your mother in laws parents were called David Robertson and Margaret Gilchrist? right? Davids parents were called David Robertson and Janet McMurtie, and my friends dad has the middle name McMurtie ( although we have had various spellings) so my friends dad is a great grandchild of David and Janet, grandchild of David and Margaret and a nephew of your mother in law Margaret Robertson McKinlay!!! Just need to find the parents!!!
