Whitby Ships - Muster Rolls 1751 & 1753
« on: Thursday 14 May 09 18:50 UTC (UK) »

Hello,

I have found a reference relating to James Cook which shows that the mate  on the "Three Brothers" in 1751 was John Swainston, and he was also one of the masters of the "Friendship" in 1753.

I believe he might be part of my Mother's family lines, and would like to find out more about him. Does anyone know what details will be recorded in the Musters, and where those details might be available to check? I understand that the originals are preserved at Whitby Museum but doubt if they would be open to public inspection.

Any help appreciated,
Colin

If nowhere else you may wish to search the Australian national library - they definitely have copies of the muster rolls of ships on which Cook sailed.

look here for the hard copy, but I beleive that somewher is a pdf copy -- not 100% sure though

Here are some links that you may find of interest although they start after Cooky joined the navy

Hi Colin,

The ships musters are open for inspection. I had a look at them a few years ago. At that time I just walked in to the museum and asked to see them and was able to spend time browsing through them. If you are traveling from far afield it might be an idea to phone just to check what the access arrangements are.

The musters and other historical documents are looked after by the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society who are apparently allocated space in the museum.

They have a booklet for sale which gives the musters of all the ships that James Cook served in during his time at Whitby.

Denn,
Thanks for the links they were very interesting. I couldn't find anything in the Library, but I'll try again later when I have a bit more time to check properly. There was loads on Bob Sander's site, including some muster roll transcriptions but not the one's I'm particularly interested in.

John,
It's good to know that the muster's are available at Whitby. It means I'll get there a bit earlier this year than usual  Grin
If it's a family day out I know I'd get some black looks if I suggested a trip to the Library, but I think they will be quite keen on a visit to the Museum  Wink Grin Grin

My thanks to you both,
Colin

John Swainston, aged 30, served as Mate on Liberty in 1747. In 1751, aged 32 he sailed as mate on Three Brothers, owner John Walker, Robert Watson master, James Cook as a Seaman. He lists his previous voyage as on Jane, master Wm Dobron. In 1753 he was master of John Walker's ship Friendship with James Cook as Mate.

Although there are Swainstons in Whitby, there is not a John bap around 1717. On the muster rolls his place of birth is given as Guisborough. So you have a date and place of birth.

I hope this helps

Hi Stephen

Thanks very much for those details, I haven't been able to get to Whitby yet but it is getting near the top of the list. As you say, his age and place of birth should make him easy to pin down.
It's very much appreciated.

Regards,
Colin
