Coronell Buttler c1620 Bampton - Any Ideas?
« on: Saturday 25 April 09 22:01 UTC (UK) »

I have found the father of Mary Buttler chr 18 Jun 1643 Bampton, to be the daughter of Coronell Buttler.  I have a strong suspicion that this is a phonetic spelling for Colonel.  There is nothing about him (or his wife) on the LDS IGI apart from this and am wondering if anybody has any ideas.  As this was roughly civil war time, I am intrigued.  There are a number of Butlers around this time on the Hugh Wallis web site for the parish but no other clues.

For info, Mary Buttler married Thomas Howse 22 Nov 1669 Bampton.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Steph ...

I checked my copy of the OFHS's booklet which gives an index to the Protestation Oath Returns of 1641/2 to see what was listed for BUT(T)LER.

Although this surname was not recorded for Bampton itself, there was a William BUT(T)LER listed for Brize Norton (the only one in an adjacent parish - although it should be noted that the parishes to the south previously in Berkshire are not included in the index).

I then had a look at the Brize Norton PRs - William BUTLER married Susanna COOPER on 10 JUN 1639.  A William BUTLER had a son baptised in the parish in 1641, but no further children turn up in the registers (I checked up to and including 1655) and there were no burials.

The above all "fits" quite nicely - William and Susanna could have moved to the neighbouring parish of Bampton sometime between 1641 and 1643.  It might be worth checking the Bampton PRs to see if any further children turn up!

Hope this is of some use!

The only other Buttler baptism in the Bampton PRs was Margerie 16 Jun 1641 daughter of John.
Can't see a marriage

I note that on your BG forum posting you've found a Parliamentarian called Colonel John BUTLER, which seems to fit well with Carolyn's posting above.

Possible marriages for this John from the OFHS's Oxfordshire Marriage Index (1538-1837):

1640 - John BUTTLER at Witney
1635 - John BUTLER at Epwell
1640 - John BUTLER at Oxford (bride and groom both from Witney)

Additionally, as Bampton is right on the old Oxfordshire/Berkshire county boundary, you may want to have a search done by the OFHS of their N. Berks. Marriage Index.

Thanks for your efforts, it gives me a bit more to think about and try to put together.  I had left it for a while as I was becoming a bit obsessive searching the internet for info on the members of the army in the civil war in the Bampton area!  You've now set me off again!

Regards
