Ann PERRY and Richard LEY or LAY - Lanlivery
« on: Friday 15 May 09 02:47 BST (UK) »

Hi
I'm looking for help with this couple.
Ann Perry, daughter of Charles Perry and Mary Dyer, and Richard Ley,  carpenter, son of John Ley, labourer, were married 28/3/1840 Lanlivery and had a daughter Elizabeth Ann Ley born 7/9/1840 Lanlivery.
1841 census I can find a Richard Ley at Redmoor , Lanlivery, but no wife and daughter.
I cannot seem to find a death for wife and daughter either.
There is another marriage in 1847 for a Richard Ley, bachelor, labourer, of lanlivery, son of John Ley, labourer,  to a Mary Cullis. My question is - is this the same Richard Huh??
Any help with this couple would be very much appreciated

Thanks in advance

this looks like her baptism, same residence as the census

and child of Richard & Mary

have you checked out these deaths, both sept qtr 1843 ?
Elizabeth lee Bodmin vol 9 pg 25
Ann Maria Ley Bodmin vol 9 pg 26

Do you have both marriage certs? Does Richard sign in both cases? It could be a coincidence - 2 cousins both named after their grandfather,. I'm not sure that a carpenter would be an ag lab on the census 15 months later, unless he wasn't being entirely truthful on his marriage.

 Undecided

Hi Osprey
Thanks for your reply.
I have both marriage certs of Richard Ley. The first one to Ann Perry he signs his name, and the 2nd one to Mary Cullis he signs with his mark.  That should probably tell me its 2 different richards., and the fact 1 is a carpenter and the other is labourer, but they are both sons of John Ley a labourer, and they both are living in the same area. Richard, is also listed as carpenter on daughter elizabeth ann leys birth cert.

I saw the 2 deaths indexes for ann maria ley and elizabeth lee both 1843 in bodmin.
I had ruled them out,  because both names slightly incorrect., but may be worth purchasing the certificates on the off chance they are my ann ley and daughter elizabeth ann ley.

The other possibility is they moved away after daughters birth. But the question then is where???

Like you, I suspect these are 2 different people. I don't think it's likely that someone having been apprenticed as a carpenter would then be working as an ag lab, and then on later census entries, a quarry or mine labourer.

Can't find burials for to match the death regs to give a clue.

Have you tried the online parish clerk for Lanlivery for any extra info?

Do you have a baptism for Richard?
