information on finding wills
« on: Friday 07 August 09 15:35 UTC (UK) »

Hi
I am hoping that some kind person can help me. I wanted to find out if my g-grandfather left a will, but I do not know how to go about it.  He died in Louth, Lincolnshire in 1845.
Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can give me.

Probably worth looking at the national archives website, the first set (PROB 11) are the actual documents for download, the second set (IR26) allow you to check the name and address of the executor, useful if there is more than one possible will for a particular name.

London Gazette online might also be worth searching too, not just for probate records but also for other references to the name that may have been made.

Hi Angelgirl

I have the Index of Lincolnshire Consistory Court Wills 1801-1858 - if you give me the name of your great grandfather I'll be happy to see if he's listed.  The index also gives the place of death and year.

If he did leave one you can apply to Lincolnshire Archives for a copy of it.  The order form is on their website, but you need to download, print it etc and then post it.  (On the left hand side of the home page there is an index, click on 'Copies' and you'll find the information and forms.)

Cheers

Pip

Hi Glen and Pip
Thank you both for your replies. They were most helpful.
My g-grandfather was called John Ashton and as far as I have been able to check he died in Louth Lincolnshire in 1844/5. Thank you for checking that out for me Pip.

Hi Angelgirl

Unfortunately there is no John Ashton matching the year of the death Sad

There are 3 listed, one died 1814 Revesby, the next 1857 Spilsby and the last one 1830 Tetford.  There is a Samuel Ashton died 1853 in Louth - a connection to John perhaps?

The reference number for this one is LCC WILLS 1853/18 with the date 18530000.

Sorry not be able to send you a more positive reply.

Regards

Pip

Several John Ashton deaths in and around Louth at the time listed on freebmd, presumably that explains the uncertainty surrounding the date.

It will also make identifying any potential will as the correct one far more difficult especially if the assorted John Ashtons had children/spouses that share names too. (eg John, son of John in two or more families).

Hi Pip and Glen
Once again thank you both for your help. It was very kind of you.
The Samuel Ashton one may be of help to me though as I have just found a Samuel in Louth that I believe was a sibling of John.

Thanks again for the help
