Jonas Malsbury c1782
« on: Friday 15 May 09 15:39 BST (UK) »

Hi,
I'm looking for some expert help in getting me further back in my family tree. Can anyone assist?

I have traced my family branch back to Jonas Malsbury, who according to the 1851 Census was born in Whitfield, Northants c1782. I have found him on the 1841 Census and 1851 Census and know that he died in 1856 in Litchborough, Northants. He married Hannah Marriott in Litchborough in Aug 1806 but I can't locate baptism details for him anywhere!!

Can anyone help find his baptism record and therefore who his parents were? I'm well and truly stuck!

Hi Dianne ...

Welcome to Rootschat!

I don't have the parish registers for Whitfield, but had a look at the Northamptonshire Marriage Index (1700-1837) for any MALSBURY (and variants) marriages in the area and around the right time.

There were three, all within approx. 6/8 miles of Whitfield:

MALBERY - 1770 - Middleton Cheney
MALSBURY - 1772 - Weedon Lois
MALSBURY - 1780 - Culworth

There were no marriages actually in Whitfield, but this may be because they often took place in the bride's parish.  Jonas's parents may then have moved to Whitfield for various reasons.

If you can actually find Jonas's baptism in Whitfield, I could then see if it matches any of the above marriages.

Hi All.

Welcome from me also Dianne.  Smiley

There does not appear to be a baptism for Jonas, although you could ask Alan
or Marilyn who have already transcribed all the Baptisms (1700 upwards) and
Marriages available for Northamptonshire (pre 1700 upwards).

They would be sure to find him if he is listed under another variant, etc.

Thanks to both for your suggestions and thanks for the warm welcomes too.

I have a copies of the Northamptonshire Marriage Index 1700 - 1837 and Northamptonshire Births & Baptism Index 1751 - 1812 and whilst there are Malsburys (and variants) listed, Jonas is missing. His marriage is recorded in Litchborough in 1806 and shows he was living in the parish at the time and he stayed there until death. The baptism index records two of his children born in Litchborough (I'm hoping 1812 - 1837 will become available soon so I can trace the others).

Its a possibility that he wasn't born in Northamptonshire at all and moved to Litchborough, although by far the largest number of Malsburys were from Northamptonshire. Its also possible that there is a transcription error somewhere although I doubt it e.g. James looks a bit like Jonas. Or perhaps he just liked the name and adopted it from something else!

Before I widen the search to other counties, or try to get to the library, I wondered if there was something unusual which might explain why he seems to have appeared from nowhere. For example, are any of the parish records missing or was Jonas a variant for some other name?

Could there be any other reasons?
