Cumberland Information Please
« on: Tuesday 12 May 09 16:29 UTC (UK) »

I am travelling through Cumberland on the way up to Scotland on Thursday 14th May and would like to visit the area where my Grandmother and her family lived  from 1878 to around 1912 to take a few photographs.

The family lived in  Borwick Rails Millom during 1881
Furnace Row Cottages Workington during 1891
Byron Street Workington during 1901 to ?

Would anyone have any idea if these places still exist, I know its a long shot?

I have 'googled' but haven't had much luck in finding out any information.
My gr.grandfather worked as an iron furnaceman in the local iron works from 1880... not sure which one though.

I would appreciate any help please.

regards
malshie

Byron Street, Workington ... new houses? http://tinyurl.com/qddpu5

Furnace Row, Workington ... I can't find one at Workington, but there's one at nearby Distington (the unnamed one below Winscales Ave) http://tinyurl.com/qlyqy5

Borwick Rails seems to be a small area to the east of Millom http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=318614&Y=479989&A=Y&Z=115

This means that you will need to take j36 (Kendal) from M6 and follow the coast road to Millom. From Millom travel north on A595 to Workington....I know most people have satnav these days but the Millom-Whitehaven stretch of the A595 is a glorious run with views over the Irish Sea and to the Isle of Man...it's quite a detour from the drive north on M6 tho....don't under-estimate the journey time - hope you enjoy your trip.

The ironworks in Millom didn't close until 1968 but I suspect that the one in Workington would be a lot larger. As you come into workington soon after the cemetary on your left and a football stadium (it's rugby really) again on your left, you can turn left over the railway and you are in the old steelworks. How much is still visible I don't know cos I haven't been for a couple of years but it stretched for about a mile when I was young. As well as the wonderful views described by maryd, don't forget the prison and the nuclear installation - all worth a photo or 2. And if you have time a stop at the estuary at ravenglass is always lovely.

Furnace Row Distington, still exists, its alongside the Central Motor Company, just off the new roundabout on the A595.

Thank you all for your replies and suggestions for our trip to Cumberland.

Geoff E thanks for taken the time to reply - great maps, will help in locating where we want to do some sightseeing

Mary will definately take your advice re Millom-Whitehaven stretch, sounds lovely only hope the rain stays away!

Bob thanks for mentioning the Iron Works, prison etc., definately worth a photo or two

Jeff, what a fantastic photograph, one to go in the Family History Album would you know the date it would of been taken please?

Really looking forward to our trip, although, I am now thinking that a couple of hours is not going to be long enough to have a good look around! I will let you know how it goes.

Thank you all so much

kindest regards

Sorry Malshie, Don't know the date - but probably about 1890s by Dresses.

The larger House on the left was the Works Managers or Foremans house. They are still there.
The Iron Works was about 200 yards away, it was called The Distington Haematite Iron Company, they made 'Pig Iron' until 1922. Maximising at 700 Tons per week.
