Ellen's birth is before full civil registration started here in Ireland in 1864 so parish records will be required to find her birth/baptism details.

do you know what religion Ellen was ?

Various Catholic and Church of Ireland records survive, but you would need to know which parish she was born in to start searching these. The Irish Times has several useful maps, including this one of the RC parishes : http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/sligorc.htm

The Irish Family Family History Foundation website has various parish register transcripts for Co. Sligo at : http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/index.php  Its a pay site, records cost €5 to view. The basic index is free once you register

I assume 'Makin' is Ellen's married name .. do you know where she married or what her maiden name was ?

There are a few variations on the surname spelling - the most common nowadays being 'Macken'
