Hi everyone,


Edward Whitehead, having been incumbent at St. John's Chichester, and declared bankrupt, then became a curate at Hailsham, and in 1872, was appointed to be Rector of Winchelsea according to the The Derby Mercury (Derby, England), Wednesday, November 13, 1872; Issue 8260, from 19th century British Newspapers and also  The Times Thursday, Dec 12, 1872; pg. 5; Issue 27558; col E

He remained in post until he died on 19th August 1883.  Would anyone know where he was buried?

Lambeth Palace - London hold details of Anglican Churchmen

have you searched the burial records for the church as it was usual to bury the vicar (etc.) inside the church

Hi there Tom

Went over Winchelsea Church this afternoon (I married my second wife there some 20 years) and had a look around for your Edward Whitehead.

On a board to the left of the Alter was the list of Winchelsea Vicars and yes he was there

Edward Whitehead MA 1872 - 1883

To the right of the main altar and within a small chapel was a White Marble Tablet attached to the Wall with the following Inscription in Black:

To the Dear Memory of
Charlotte
Gentle & Loving Wife of
The Revd Edward Whitehead MA
Rector of this Parish
She died November 6th 1878
Aged 61 Years
Also in Loving Memory of
Rev Edward Whitehead MA
Eleven Years Rector of this Parish
Died August 19th 1883
Aged 70 Years


So from the above I would suggest that they are both buried there

Forgot to mention that the next time I go over there (unfortunately my inlaws live in Winchelsea) Lips Sealed Sad I will take a picture of same and post it on here.

Will also look to see if I can identify their final resting place for you

Wow, thanks very much for that, now I know the death date of Charlotte as well as Edward, that's a real bonus. She was his second wife, they married in Bath after his return from Madras, where he had served as a volunteer chaplain to the garrisons in that area of Southern India. I was in the British Library recently and copied out his journal he wrote of his voyage to Madras in 1838- a terrible journey- we tend to forget the sort of voyage such people would make in those days, how long it was, how dreadfully hot at times-he condescended to take off his waistcoat when he reached African climes!!

I shall look forward to seeing the picture of the gravestone if you managed to find it! It maybe in the church itself of course.

Have not yet located the actual spot they were buried - but am working on it

Another picture showing how the plaque is situated inside the church, within the 3rd Chapel and in the corner near the Alter.

The effigy and Tomb on the right is that of Gervase Alard, Admiral of the Western Fleet and appointed by Edward 1st and of supreme workmanship and is among the churches greatest treasures (according to the handbook)

So it seems Edward & Charlotte are in good company

That's a couple of good photos, and I am sure that Edward would have approved of his final resting place. However I think he would have thought himself much more important than a mere Admiral.

Having read his journal recently that he wrote whilst on board "The Duke of Argyll" on voyage to Madras he wrote "After dinner that night, the passengers danced to the fiddle of a sailor on board. “I didn’t join in, not because I think it that the cult of dancing sinful but because I think it totally inconsistent with the superior gravity of discretion and soberness of conduct of a clergyman particularly”.
