Chester Wife Ann the beer seller
« on: Friday 15 May 09 20:47 UTC (UK) »

Charles Hibbert was the ostler and his wife Ann nee Wilkinson sold beer at their home on King St Chester in the early 1800's.
I have their marriage register as 2nd April 1824 in st oswalds church by licence.

Can anyone tell me if the  marriage licence and allegations would help me to determine Charles Hibbert's origins. Would it be worth checking them at the record office? I have no idea what info they may hold. He was b.c1798 and died 1839. desperate to know more.

Thanks for reading this.

This is a typical Marriage Allegation, with fictitious details
Date Nov. 15 1788
On which day appeared personally John Smith Of the Parish of  Wedmore in the County of Somerset And Diocese of Wells and being sworn on the Holy Evangelist Alleged and made Oath as follows: That he is of the age of Twenty five Years and intends to marry with Elizabeth Brown of the parish of Wedmore Afore said Spinster of the age of Twenty Years.

Not knowing of believing any lawful Let or Impediment by Reason of any Precontract entered into before the 25th Day of March 1754, Consanguinity, Affinity, or any other Cause whatsoever, to hinder the said intended Marriage. And he prayed a Licence to solemnize the said Marriage in the Church of Wedmore aforesaid  in which said Parish of Wedmore the said Elizabeth Brown hath had her usual Abode for the space of four Weeks past.

The said John Smith was Sworn the Day and Year first above written
Before me Wm. Priddy Surrogate

Thanks Stan for your interesting example of the marriage allegation. I guess I may have gone as far back as I can with the Hibbert line, worth a try, thanks again.

Hi,

If you check the census for other Hibberts in Chester there is a Moses, born Hoole ~1800 who in 1841 appears to have children other than his living with them as there are 2 young Charles's and a Thomas. A Thomas marries in 1844 and gives his father as Charles. On a website I can find a Moses bt 1800 Plemonstall (of which Hoole is a parish) and a Charles bt 1797 (there are others). Sadly it does not give exact dates or parents (perhaps the copies are too poor).

Anyhow this may be circumstantial but perhaps if you follow through the Moses as well this may help.

hello Junev

Thank you so much for the info. I must have missed them the first time I looked, in fact, I remember noticing his birthplace in one of the censuses mentioned Hoole.

many thanks
