Goodsells and transportation
« on: Saturday 16 May 09 07:10 UTC (UK) »

I have two family members:

Henry Goodsell age 37 transported in 1837 for 10 years

William Goodsell tansported in 1847 for 10 years.

CanI find out why they were transported and where and how they went.

I contacted Chris 1066 some two years agto at the beginning of my family tree with unknown grandfather and now with the help of all the various sites have 1250 relatives on my tree.  Now truing to put leaves on the twigs.

Thank you

On the Queensland Government site http://onesearch.slq.qld.gov.au there is the following:

William Goodsell transported on the Maria Somes 3 May 1850
Place of arrival: Van Diemen's Land

Henry Goodsell transported on the Gilmore 3 Oct 1838
Place of Arrival: Van Diemen's Land

No notes on their offences, you would probably need to go to the East Sussex Record Office and look them up.

Regards

They were the only names that came up so I am guessing they went alone.

Here is a wikipedia link to Van Diemen's Land.

Van Diemen's Land is Tasmania.

There are excellent reords available for convicts who actually arrived there.

If you go to http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=11. and enter Goodsell into the search engine, you'll find a record for William Goodsell. There are links that will let you see the actual record online. And it's free.....

Henry Goodsell may have left Tasmania for Victoria as a free man in 1852.

http://www.archives.tas.gov.au/nameindexes gives you the various indexes you can search.

Another site worth searching is the National Archives site criminal registers http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/browser.asp?CATLN=3&CATID=7582&GPE=False&MARKER=0

I managed to find some interesting information about a transportee in my tree from this site including why they were transported.
