You could be right Carol, that they were registered in mums maiden name - Like Evie here I couldnt get a birth for Caroline either. Nor can I get any of them in 1851 - maybe Caroline senior and Junior are under Mums name there still......

(an Ann Willis bn 1848 Oxfordshire is with with widowed dad John , a tailor in 1851)

So maybe they were both born somewhere else(perhaps where mum came from?) but christened in London.

I tried Holborn(St Clement Danes) in Dec 48 or Mar 49 for a Caroline Elizabeth and got one called Slate

Can't see a Henry/Harry that would fit with that surname though Roll Eyes

Cannot find the family in 1851, but there is a marriage in Lambeth Jun 1846 on free BMD John Willis and on the same number Caroline Elizabeth Smith Undecided (although there are others as well).

The trouble is that even if we find a John Willis / Caroline marriage we wont know if it is th eright one. As we have seen there is another John Willis / Caroline couple around with the daughter Ann (who we did find in 1851, but ruled out as also found them in 1861) who possibly married around the same time.

I can't see them in 1871 or 61 never mind 51  Roll Eyes

I've set them out in 1891 and 81 earlier in this thread- perhaps we should work backwards and see if we can find them(and type them out) in the 71 and 61.

Have to start dinner now or hubby will think I've been on Rootschat all day  Tongue

CAroline listed as daughter in 1861

RG9 178 89 36
6 Holles Str, Westminster

John 35 Factor? ? Maker bn Glos Newnhall
Caroline wife 30 bn Middx Chelsea
Caroline 11 bn St PAncras
Harry 6 bn St Clements Danes

So, John was born Gloucestershire.

I take your point Carol about the marriages.

Evie have you looked at the 1861 image?

The surname looks like Mills - but 'could' be Willis I suppose.

John is born in Stepney,and I think he's a Gaiter maker(socks?)
It's Caroline who's born in Newnham Glos.
Caroline dau born Chelsea and Harry born St Pancras.

Oh Carol - dont say I've made another error on this one!

Mind you - if it is caroline bn Glos and him bn Stepney then that agrees with the 1871 census

I think I will give up - I keep seeing the wrong dates / places / names and leading people up garden paths without meaning to

I must also go and get dinner or my husband will think the same!

Hello folks Smiley

Lizdb, I hope you don't mind my amending your post of the 1861 Census (reply #8)........

To me, the image has...

John Willis  35 b. London, Stepney
Caroline 30 b. Glouscester, Newnham
Caroline 11 b. Middlesex, Chelsea
Harry 6 b. Middlesex, St Pancras

I think the Joshua in the 1871 Census is perhaps a mistake of the enumerator; the age of Harry therein looks like 17.

Edit.....was typing this while the rest of you were posting the same info.

I think the Joshua in the 1871 Census is perhaps a mistake of the enumerator; the age of Harry therein looks like 17.

I think that the enumerator must have been having a bad day when he wrote Joshua in 1871,rather than John- he is an Accoutrement maker, does that fit with him being a gaiter maker in 1861?

I think Harry is 17(his 1's are shorter and his 7's more flamboyant and below the line each time).........so I'm convinced it's the same family.
Although mum Caroline has aged 13 years from being 30 in 1861  Grin
