COMPLETED West Sussex RO June
« on: Saturday 16 May 09 19:57 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I shall be going to the West Sussex RO again towards the end of June.

I am happy to do simple Parish Register look-ups from available transcripts or fiche. Please post on this thread with as much info as possible and I will see what I can do.

Hi Omega

I'll see if I can find a burial for him. Although if his wife claimed she was a spinster then maybe he left her rather than died. Could you post date of marriage please? Narrows down the timeframe for the search.

Hi Jan,

May I take up your generous offer?  (Yet again!)

Sullington Marriages 1754-1811, WSRO Ref Par 190/1/1/3 (2 fiche).

The SMI has the following marriage.

Quote
Place: Sullington, West Sussex
Date: 27 Feb 1786
Subject: John BURCHELL, bach
Spouse: Susan SEARLE, sp

The PRTS transcript of Sullington Marriages does not have this; instead it has the following.

Quote
27/02/1786, John SEARLE and Sarah BURCHELL, both single

I think the two entries refer to the same event and one (or both) is seriously in error.  I'd really like to know what the PR actually records for the marriage.  Who's the bride and who's the groom, and was the bride's given name Susan or Sarah?

Further info - the SFHG website does not record any SMI correction for the event; Sullington is not well-covered by the online IGI and the marriage cannot be found there.

Thanks in advance,
Stovepipe

Hi Jan,

Could you have a look for names of children baptised in St Nicholas Church in the parish of Worth to parents John Dancy and Eleanor.  Eleanor died on 12 Dec 1826 according to the headstone at St Nicholas Church, Worth.

I have their children as
John born 1813 but died 1815 (buried in St Nicholas)
and then there is a male found in the 1841 born abt 1821 with them called "Lue Dancey" - never to be found or referenced again in any b/m/d records - intrigued ...
Michael
Sarah
Eleanor
Richard

I wonder if they had any other children or if they had another son John after their first son John died, and who this "Lue" was.

Many thanks
Penny

Hi Penny

Could you give me a bit more detail so I know what years to look at please.
Rough years of birth for the other children? Date of marriage for John and Eleanor?

Thanks

Jan Wink

Not to worry have found the extra info on the IGI so will check it all for you and see if I can find the mysterious Lue Cheesy

Hi Omega and Jan,

Thank you Omega, for looking that up;

The "Allen" could actually have been their daughter Ellen/Eleanor, named after her mum.  Again, with the name Allen, I found no trace of the existence in any BMD records afterwards. "Elen" was found with her father in the 1841 and is absolutely definitely with her married sister Sarah in 1851 (marked as "sister") so I have no doubt Ellen was John's daughter.

However, did it definitely say Allen was a son?  (This is a bit of a mystery because we generally absolutely beleive the parish records!)

I had in mind I should add the date of the wedding and then forgot to put it in - it was 2 March 1813 at St Nicholas Church, and Andrea kindly checked that and gave me the witness names.

If either of you are willing, I'd be really happy if the baptisms could be checked between 1813 and Dec 1826 because of this type of anomaly and to see if there were two Johns and any other children.

Thanks again,
Penny

Hi Penny

I either need a new pair of glasses or put in down to the writing.

Having another look ,your right,it is Elinor, even Mum`s name looks like Allen.

Sorry if i confused you.

Hi Jan

I've got an interesting one here.  If you are able to look at original burial records would you be able to look at the burials of Robert and Alice Vincent who were buried at Cowfold on 2 March 1590.  The transcripts that I have say suicide beside Alice's entry and I wondered if it was a double suicide and there is anything entered by Robert's name?
