Samuel SHEPPERD & Susan PATEY
« on: Saturday 16 May 09 22:15 UTC (UK) »

Please, I need a little help. I have ground to a halt.

I am trying to find the following in the 1841 Census, which will hopefully lead me to find their baptism details.

This is what I have constructed, so far. I am not confident.
I picked the children William & Edward, only because of the middle name of Patey.
I know they had children Maria Elizabeth & James as per the South Australian records.

Samuel SHEPPERD & Susan PATEY had the following children;
William Patey SHEPPERD, born Jan/Mar 1838, Kingsbridge - as per FreeBMD
Maria Elizabeth SHEPPERD, born Jan/Mar 1841, Newton Abbot - as per FreeBMD
Edward Patey SHEPPERD, born Apr/Jun 1843, Kingsbridge - as per FreeBMD
James SHEPPERD, born 10 Mar 1844, Newton Abbot - as per another researcher's tree
Johanna Kate Patey SHEPPERD, born 31 May 1847, registered Kingsbridge as per FreeBMD (my research line)

They arrived on the 20th Aug 1848, in South Australia aboard the "Duke of Bedford".
The Passenger List reads; SHEPHERD, Samuel and wife and five children.

I know about the following children born in South Australia;
Rosa Susan Patey SHEPPERD b.16 May 1850
Marion Ann SHEPPERD b.16 Jul 1852
Samuel Robert Patey SHEPPERD b.17 Apr 1856

I am confident that these are the South Australian death entries for Samuel & Susan;
Samuel SHEPPERD, d.1 May 1890, at Port Lincoln, aged 78 (equates to born abt 1812)
Susan SHEPPERD, d.1 Mar 1897, at Lake Wangery, aged 86 (equates to born abt 1811)

Can you please help me with the next link in their ancestry.

Regards
Grantley

Hi

Unfortunately - ages were rounded down to the nearest 5yrs on the 1841 and actual birthplaces were not shown - just whether they were born in the county in which they were living

I looked up Ambrose Patey on the 1851 census and he was born 1812 Stokeinham Devon if that helps at all

He married Maria Scott December qtr 1850 Newton Abbott Vol 10 Page 282 so a copy of his marriage cert will give you a fathers name - always assuming he was Susan's brother and not another relative

Hi Carole,

Thankyou. That was the kick-start that I needed.

Samuel was a builder in South Australia.

I really appreciate your help.

Could someone please help me get details of Ambrose PATEY (b.1812) & his wife Maria in the 1861 Devon Census. (I have him in the other census returns)

I can see them in the free search of ancestry.com, but not in TheGenealogist.co.uk (which I use to download the returns). Obviously a transcription variation.

Could someone please tell me the details for Ambrose PATEY & Maria and anyone else in that household.

Also could I have the name, age & place of birth of someone else on that page. Hopefully I can find the census page using that other person's name.

Hi Grantley,

The information is available on http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

You can scroll the adjacent properties for other names which may help you to locate the entry  Wink

Thankyou Kris,

I keep forgetting to check there.

Previously I boldly said to Carole, that she gave me the kick-start that I needed. Well, I stalled straight away.
Ambrose PATEY appears not to have had children.
I can not find baptisms for either Susan PATEY or Ambrose PATEY

Don't give up hope!!
The 1841 census transcription made by Ray Osborn, available at
 http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~our4bears/S~oke41.htm shows living in the village at that time a 60 year old Ambrose PATEY plus a 55 year old wife Susanna and many other older PATEYs who may have been the parents of your Susan & Ambrose. There are also several SHEPPERD families.
Ray will send you the actual transcription if you e-mail him, plus he also has the Chruch PRs indexed and will happily supply those. It would appear that both families were living at Chillington in Stokenham.

Thankyou Carole & DOB,

There seems to be possibilities (concentrating on the Census Returns), especially focusing on the name Ambrose, but nothing seems to fit.

I had previously found the web site http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~our4bears/S~OKE41.htm and was very grateful for the transcripts. It never entered my brain to click on the "Home Page" to see what was on offer.

Maybe, doing it a little too fast.

Thanks again,

Baptism of Susan PATEY plus the marriage of her parents,
Baptism of Samuel SHEPPERD.

What a bonus.
