The variation of spellings are huge for this family.  GOODSILL GOODSEL etc.  Remember that in times gone by and pre 1860's when schooling became compulsory surnames were spelled as they sounded.  Accents then were so much stronger than they are today.

With regards to the Kent Border Salehurst is about 2 miles from the county line and Bodiam about 1 mile.  Therefore I would also consider looking at the parish of Hawkhurst which is next door to these

To add to  my last post I don't know why but I have a fleeting memory that the GOODSELL family have a property named after them around Salehurst or lived in a big house in that area.  Maybe Chris or someone local to chase my recollection down as I no longer live there.  I would but I am now 200 miles north Sad

In that case Genresearch I think I feel pretty confident about Gutsell becoming Goodsell.  If I add my Sussex accent to both names they could well be mistaken for each other.  Grin

Gutsell is another I have seen as well.  I think that variation is mentioned in the Calendar of Robertsbridge Abbey which when I get over to my parents next I will check for you

I am trying to make the connection between Goodsell family in Sussex with Goodsells in Kent and also connecting to the Goodsells in America.   I have Alfred Goodsell going to America but would like to connect other families even back to 1600's.

Any help gratefully received.
