Casson's of Ulpha
« on: Sunday 17 May 09 11:16 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I have turned my attention to the Casson side of my family and all I can say is HELP

With the help of several people including the wonderful Margaret Russell I believe I have found my direct line back to John and Mary Casson nee Casson of Low Herst, Ulpha.  There are two branches of the family mainly from Sella in Dunnerdale and Kilnbank in Ulpha and they appear to be very inter-related.

They had the following children:

John    1730-1780 m Margaret Jackson
Hannah    1732 m Reuben Walker
Robert    1734-1738
Mary    1736-1766 m William Boyd
Ferdinando    1739-1822 m Ann Atkinson
Alice    1741-b1788
Dinah    1743 m Hartley Carter
Ann    1747 m Jacob Knight
David    1749-1829 m Hannah Hunter - my 5th gr grandparents

With Seathwaite being in Lancashire and Ulpha in Cumberland they are less than a 1/4 of a mile apart so I am putting this message on both boards.

Any help would be appreciated on the Casson's especially children of the above etc

Regards

Hi Sandra

This helps enormously, thank you.

I have some of the info but not anywhere near as much as this.  You mention conflicting info on Alice and Annie, may I ask what?

From the information you have given me, you sound as though you are related, is this possible.

Again many thanks for your help.

Regards

Hi

Alice 1741.  I have 2 notes on this.  The first being 1750 for the death year & the second a claim she died 3 June 1804 - so this is why I couldn't be more helpful.

Ann 1747.  I have a death year of 1757 but you seem to think that she could have married to Jacob Knight.  I have looked around but can see no marriage anywhere but that doesn't mean to say there wasn't one.  So I am open minded on both of those.

You start of your line with John Casson & Mary (nee Casson) - I have a note that the father of Mary Casson was Robert Casson born about 1680 & married to Mary.
On Johns line, his father was again John born about 1680 - 1725 who married Alice 1680 - 1735
The generation further back is reputed to be Nicholas abt 1651 - 1711 & his wife Isabel abt 1651.
This would appear to agree with a will of Nicholas Casson 1711.

There are photocopies of the will of Nicholas Casson of Sella. Dunnerdale. Parish Of Kirkby Ireleth.  Thomas Casson of Grimecrage. Ulpha 1665. John Casson of Pavelholme. Ulpha. Husbandman 1648/49 & Roger Casson Hall Dunnerdale. 1667 all at Barrow Records Office.  It would be interesting to have a look & see if you could inter-relate your Cassons that way.

Nicholas gave instruction in his will for burial at Broughton.  To his son  Thomas Casson of "Sellah" he gave his estate at Birks.  Letters of tuition of Grace Casson were granted to John Casson of Ulpha - one of the executors of the will.

No I am not related to the Casson line but through helping someone in Australia on the Casson line much later have strayed across & accumulated quite alot of information.
Hope some of the "tit-bits" help.

Hi,
I have only just joined this service. I was trying to find other info on one of my ancestors David Casson ( 1749-1829) married to Hannah Hunter ( 1747-1798) and googled John Casson and arrived here and have joined.
I have only recently traced these names through ancestry.com and other peoples family trees.
I live in Australia and I have family info and photos back to my great grandfather who was John Cooper from Ellinborough in Cumberland. He was a mining engineer and killed in an accident at Flimby mines. His son Tom Pooley Cooper came to Australia in the 1800's and married and and there are now many relatives here.
John coopers father was Thomas Cooper his father was Archibald Cooper who married Ann Casson (1810-1910) which is 5 generations ago.
Hope to hear from you soon. I have photos and information back to John Cooper. Any help with other material would be most welcome.
I live in Melbourne and I am a teacher ( as was my father, and grandfather)

Hi Millicent.

You are quite welcome to any Casson information I can give you.  It goes back to Nicholas Casson 1651 - 1711.
When do you think the marriage of Archibald Cooper & Ann Casson took place ?
I can see an IGI entry for Archibald Cowper & Ann Casson 25 Oct 1824 St Bees but would be suspicious of that based on other information.

The info you on archibald cowper ( Cooper) is the same as I have which i gleaned from other peoples family trees from ancestry.com
I have traced ancestry back to Nicholas 1651-1711 also ( thru ancestry's family trees) but have no other info re children, occupation or any sense of what these peole were ike and how they lived their lives.
So anything you have would be good thnaks
Are you a relative at all?

Hi Millicent.

There were quite a few Ann Casson's but the date you gave of 1810 matches with Ann Casson daughter of Joseph Casson 1780-1869 & Elizabeth Stable 1783 - 1863.
I asked about a marriage date because I was sceptical that this one would have married in 1824 at 14 years old.
On the IGI Records there is a christening record for Myles Casson 22 Aug 1832 - son of Ann Casson.
Following Myles through the census records, he lives with his grandparents Joseph & Elizabeth & married Jane Butterfield in 1869 at Bootle.
If you google Myles Casson, it will take you to the Lancaster Family web-site which will back up the information above.
This particular family of Cassons were a farming family at Baskell. Ulpha. Cumberland but interestingly - there is reference to the Stable family at Baskell from about 1745. John Stable formerly of Baskell died in 1793.

The children of Nicholas 1651 & Isabel were:- Jennet 1676  Thomas 1677  Elizabeth 1678 John 1680 Grace 1682

Regards.

Hi Millicent.

Have you got the copy of the marriage cert for Archibald & Ann, it may give the parents names.
I can see which line you are following to get to them.  The 1851 census gives Ann, age 46 as born in Bromfield - that would make it 1805.
Interestingly, there is a birth registered at Wigton for Ann Casson 1 Dec1804 - christened 29 June 1806 to a John Casson & Ann Pearson.
Bromfield was a parish 5 miles to the west of Wigton.

Best Wishes.
