James McFarlane - when was he born?
« on: Sunday 24 May 09 18:34 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to trace details of James Mcfarlane.  I have seen a letter (extracts listed below)  where he writes to his father David McFarlane from Portsmouth 25th 1842

Euphan McFarlane his sister was my ggg grandmother.  I have found the baptisms of her brother John and William Smart Mcfarlane, but until now did not realise she had a brother James or a sister Ann.  I can not find any details of their births or them on the 1841 census.

As John McFarlane was born in 1808, William Smart McFarlane 1821 and Euphan McFarlane 1825 all in Perth, I assume James to have been born.

From the letter I don't know if it means that William is also in Armed forces, or John, or which brother is in the West Indies.

Can anyone help me find out details of James, William, Ann or John, and when their mother Margaret died.  Euphan Mcfarlane married Thomas Anderson who later joined the Cold Stream Guards and moved to London where he and Euphan died.

Dear Father,
I received your letter and the one from my dear sister Euphan which made me very sad to hear of the death of my dear Mother ..... I am posted for 3 years at least. I have entered on board of her majesty’s ship Samarang and we are bound for China. I have been on board 8 days and I like the ship very well we will be ready for sea in 8 or 10 days.

Dear father I will send you half pay note home ...... I have been told that the note must go in my sisters name and will be drawn at the customs house in Edinburgh and I was very sorry to hear of your poverty and the ungratitude of my brother in the West Indies. I hope my dear brother William has employment in the country as said but I hope when you write you will let me know what part of the country it is as you never mentioned of my dear sister Ann or James or their family nor either my dear Aunt Euphan.

Your affectionate son
James Macfarlane

There are 3 births on ScotlandsPeople to David McFarlane / MacFarlane and Margaret Dykes.  The 3 you are aware of.  You will be able to view the OPR records online http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

No James that I can see on SP / IGI, anywhere in Scotland.

Thanks, yes that is exactly my problem - I thought after I posted I should have been more concise about the information I was after as perhaps I was 'too wordy' in what I was looking for, so here goes - my questions were:

What happened to John McFarlane, born 1808 in Perth
What happened to William Smart McFarlane also born in Perth 1821 - last I see of him is of is an apprentice book binder in 1841
When did Margaret Dykes/Macfarlane die - as the letter implies it was around 1841
When was James Mcfarlane born and what happened to him so I can research his military career.
Who was Ann Mcfarlane the sister refered to in the later
Who was serving in the West Indies - was this another brother.
