1871 census lookup please - Wynne - COMPLETED
« on: Monday 18 May 09 10:08 UTC (UK) »

Please could someone check a census entry for me?

I have a wife and children at the top of a census page, but would like to find her husband's name (I hope he is on the previous page).

The page I have is RG10 1786, marked page 30. It's for Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.
The wife is Matilda Wynne, 30 (though it could have been transcribed 80).

Her occupation is engine driver's wife, so her huband may have been away at the time of the census.  If this is the case, could I have a fresh pair of eyes looking for their marriage please?

Matilda was born in Strood, Kent and their eldest child was born in Dyfed, Pembrokeshire but I can't find a marriage between a Mr Wynne/Wynn in any of those places.

Many thanks in advance.
Louise

Hi Louise

No husband on the previous page sorry...

Looks like a search is in order to find him

Hi Karenlee, thanks for the quick reply.

I was worried it seemed too easy just to check the previous page!

The other thing I should mention is that by 1881 Matilda is a widow, however no Mr Wynne dies in Norfolk between 1871-81.

Hi both all Smiley

I had a look around and there aren't many Matilda's born Strood ca. 1840. One Matilda Philips, born Strood 1840, is in Pembrokeshire in 1851 and 1861 with her uncle.

The only Matilda Phil*ps marriage to possibly a Mr Wynne I can see is:
Jun 1865 St Olave ( Undecided) 1d 46
Matilda Phillips to possibly Evan Wynne

Really not sure! A birth cert for one of the children seems the safest way to go.

Thanks so much everyone Smiley

Tati - Matilda Philips and Evan Wynne sound like they could be right, maybe he'd have been in St Olaves with his job?

Sandymc - the children I know of are Ada Mary Wynne (1866, Dyfed) Robert Humphreys Wynne (1868) John Arthur Wynne (1869, Great Yarmouth) Albert Edward Wynne (1873) Frederick Grant Wynne (1875).

The husband must have died after 1874, given Fred's birth date.

An Evan Humphreys Wynne died in Bangor in 1876, aged 37 - this is sounding feasible, he's the right sort of age and has moved around a lot; not to mention the middle name 'Humphreys' that the eldest son has

I should add that I have no geographical knowledge - Google has just informed me that St Olaves is right near Great Yarmouth, where they end up living. Perhaps they had family around here, I think that marriage location seems plausible
