John McBryde Oil Works Manager
« on: Monday 18 May 09 13:00 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Can anyone shed any light here please?

I am looking for some information on John McBryde Manager of the Bathgate Oil Works who retired from Young's Paraffin Light and Mineral Oil Company after 64 years service (poss 1936).  Does anyone know if he ever lived in Faraday Place?

many thanks,

Pip Smiley

Had a look at GROS today piipylong. You may already have this info but here is what there was on his death:
Chemical Works Manager (retired), married to Martha Moore, died 29 May 1939, aged 78, Burnvale Cottage, Blackburn Road, Bathgate, Father Samuel McBride, Mother Jane McDonald, Coronary Thrombosis.
I had a quick look at the census's for West Calder (Midlothian) 1881, 1891 & 1901 but found no mention of a John McBride living at Faraday Place, Addiewell.

Hi Canisp,

Thank you for that information.  All I had was the  entry from the Midlothian Advertiser in West Lothian Local History Library saying of his retirement from the Oil works.  My reason for posting is I'm trying to find why one of my line of Bells was named Martha McBryde Bell. I thought because my great grandfather was a foreman there the families might have been very friendly and named his daughter after John's wife. It turns out that John McBryde married my great grandmothers sister Martha Moore, so I am delighted Smiley thank you very much for your time,

Hi Steve,

thank you for taking the time out to find this information for me.  Although John is not a direct descendant it all  adds flesh to the bones.  I'm afraid I keep all sorts of information I find relating to my family tree, wherever they fit in so this will be added as well. It looks like Samuel and Jane were possibly born/married Ireland(??), but John and Martha's children form the typical naming pattern on the 1901 census (you can't help but to go a little further can you! Smiley)

Many thanks,
