Hi,
Having spent the last seven years trying to trace William I have had a minor breakthrough but its still along shot. Having just spoken with his nephew in Australia I was told that William went to California after 1945 with his wife and daughter. The little info I now know is William was born 13.11.1898 and his wife may have been Joyce and their daughter Joy. Williams parents were William and Sarah. Not much to go on but any help will be greatly welcomed.

Social Security Death Index has William Hood born 13 Nov. 1898 and died Oct. 1984.  His last residence was Santa Cruz, California.  His Social Security # was issued in California in 1963.  You can see this info for free on rootsweb.com or familysearch.org.

What a great hit, thanks. Is it now possible to find out if he has a gravestone that may indentify his wife and any children.

The easiest thing would probably be to see if there's an obituary for him, as it might name survivors or where he's buried.  It looks like there's a volunteer on www.raogk.org that does look-ups in Santa Cruz County.

On rootsweb.com, there is an entry in the California death index for William Hood born 13 Nov. 1898 and died 25 Oct. 1984.  His mother's maiden name is listed as Hattan.  He was born outside the US and died in Santa Cruz Co.

Just reading other us postings, and noticed if someone has worldwide a*****ty programme that it may be possible for someone to ascertain the exactl date when William died in October 1984. I can then I think order a copy of his death cert--think I am correct in saying that??

Further help needed Im afraid. I have tried ordering Williams death cert but do not appear to qualify under Californian requirements.

How little bits of info open up a big answer. William appears to have married Lilian R wilson in the uk in 1918. Their daughter Joyce L is then born. Lillian dies Santa Cruz in July 1981. From what a relation seems to record is that William left uk shores when he was in his mid teens. He was born 1932 so possibly some time after1943/47. Joyce/Joy does not appear to have married in the uk between 1938-46 but am still searching on that front.

Hi John:

I know you mentioned William's parents were William and Sarah, but I thought you mentioned William was born in 1898?  (It's late here, so perhaps I'm not following this clearly.)  Would he perhaps have immigrated right after Joy/Joyce's birth, say 1920's, rather than 1940's?  Not finding any of the family immigrating around the 1940's is strange.

That's always a possibility. It may be the family member recalls them possibly on a visit to the uk in the 1940's.

Hi All,
Update. Received marriage cert for William and Lilian, and birth of Joyce. Confirms they are my Hoods. Joyce was born in the home of her grandparents William and Sarah Hood. The electoral registers after this date only show William and Sarah. I have searched all marriages in the uk for Joyce marrying a HOLLANDER but nothing.
Could she have married in the USA and can anyone help on that front please??
