Alexander Proctor and Euphemia Brown
« on: Sunday 21 June 09 13:26 UTC (UK) »

Looking for information about and living descendants of Euphemia Brown who married Alexander Proctor (both from Scotland). She was also called Effie. She arrived in the USA in 1872, I believe) and lived in Northampton Mass. Her sister Jemima Brown arrived around 1909 from Dundee. Effie and Alexander had some children: I know of John, Emma, Harriet and Margerite. I'm particularly interested to know if there are living descendants and also what happened to Jemima (who was a nurse).
I forgot to add that Euphemia (Effie) and Jemima were my grandmother's sisters.
Thank you
Susan

Hello Susan,

You didn't specify what resources you have checked, so I will give what is found on 1910 census for 3rd Ward - Northhampton, Hampshire Massachusetts for Alex. Proctor (48) family.

Effie B. 45

Difficult to read, but kids appear to be Margaret, Eunice (Emma?), and John, and another that says "daughter" and I guess could be Harriet

Jemima is with them, but age is unreadable (looks like 2).

Effie is a widow by 1920, and all kids still living with her, same place.

I suspect to find living relatives, you are going to have the very difficult job of trying to find marriage records for Effie's kids, and perhaps a marriage record for Jemima.  It is not an easy task.

Nick

Social Security Death Index
Emma Proctor
Last residence - Northampton, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts
Born 3 April 1899
Died July 1964
Social Sec. No. issued in Massachusetts in 1951

There's a tree on Ancestry.com that has the following details on two of the Proctor children:

John Alexander Proctor (born 24 Jun. 1901 in Northampton and died 30 Oct. 1997 in Needham, Mass. - however, the Mass. death index seems to say he died in Natick) married Doris Berenice McCulloch (born 8 Jan. 1908 in Minasville, Nova Scotia, Canada and died 7 Dec. 2001 in Needham) and has at least 1 living child.

Harriet D. Proctor (born 17 Jun. 1903 and died 1 Nov. 2000, both in Northampton) was married to Raymond Lemon (born 1899 & died 1956).

The Massachusetts death index lists Harriet's spouse as J. Raymond Lemon.  There is a WWI Draft Registration Card for James Raymond Lemon in Northampton who was born 2 Jul. 1899.  There's another tree on Ancestry that lists a living child of Harriet & Raymond.  It says this living person married a living person named Winter & they have 3 living children.

1930 Census, Northampton, Mass.
Lemon, Raymond J., rents home for $54, owns a radio set, male, white, age 30, married, age at 1st marriage - 29, b. New Jersey, father b. Scotland, mother b. New York, engineer - telephone co., not a veteran
wife Harriet D., female, white, age 26, married, age at 1st marriage - 25, b. Massachusetts, parents b. Scotland, clerk - telephone co.

It looks like Emma Proctor had a conference room named after her http://www.smith.edu/deanoffaculty/about.php & received a doorknob and keyhole mounted on wood for 46 years of service.  http://asteria.fivecolleges.edu/findaids/smitharchives/manosca105.html   You might want to try e-mailing the college archives to see if they can give you any further information - a college publication might have an obituary for her.  http://www.smith.edu/libraries/libs/archives/info.htm#staff

If you search on newslibrary.com for "Harriet Lemon", you can see the beginning part of obituaries for John A. Proctor & Marguerite (Proctor) Parsons.

Hello to all these replies!
I got up this morning and found all this stuff about Euphemia. It's amazing that you all went to so much trouble. I've skimmed through it and I can see that there is so much information - all in one go  - that I'm going to enjoy myself digesting it! Thank you very much indeed!

Hi Shellesq,
I had just got up when I saw my replies, now having had breakfast at looking at this again, I realise that most of the hard work was yours! I just wanted to thank you personally - there's so much information in there. The Mrs Burns in question was my grandmother, the sister in Direlton was another sister (Martha) and what is really interesting is the description of Jemima (wonderful!!) and the fact that sister Margaret was still on the go after 1901 (the last date I have any trace of her). The rest is really going to keep me busy. Thank you so much!
If I can do anything for you let me know
