Eliza Warr c 1900 Found her she lied about her age

Balfour
« on: Saturday 07 March 09 06:03 UTC (UK) »

Hi Now I am trying to Chase down Jane Annie's mothers ancestry She was Rosina Balfour born c 1841
- cannot find a birth record
On a census in 1841 in Edinburgh I can find the parents John Balfour and Rosa with two daughters Ann b c 1838 and Margaret born c 1840 - cannot find birth records for those two or a marriage record for the parents. The census indicates the mother was born in Ireland. He is a Shoemaker

On the 1851 census I can find the 3 girls boarding at Trenent Mains, Portobello Farm. I think I found a record for the father in the Edinburgh Ciy poor house - no sign of Rose, Rosa Rosina

In 1861 I can find Rosina mother, Rosina daughter and an Infant Ann grandaughter, Grandma is a shopkeeper and ma is confectioner. Ma then married John McLachlan in 1873 after the birth of Jane out of wedlock

Do I have any hope of finding the records - I've tried SP and Family Seaech but so far no luck

I also have not found death records for John Balfour, Rosina Balfour, Rosina now Mclachlan or John Mclachlan

neither can I find the death records for daughter Jane Annie and her husband John Gowans (they fetched up in Greenock).

Any clues?

Thanks

Gillian

Hi Gillian,

This is an interesting entry for the family in 1891 ... at least I think it's them.

Address: 10 Springkell Street, Greenock, Renfrewshire
John McDonald, head, mar., 62, marine engine fitter, b. Edinburgh
Rosina McDonald, wife, mar., 47, -, b. Edinburgh
Jane McDonald, dau., unm., 19, photographer (retoucher), b. Edinburgh
Margaret McDonald, dau., unm., 16, [works in] flax mill, b. Edinburgh

John died 26th October 1900 at 14 Crescent Street, Greenock showing as the husband of Rosina Balfour. Parents John McDonald, tailor (dec.) and Isabella McDonald m.s. McDonald (also dec.). The identity of the informant really confirms it, though ... son-in-law, John Gowans of 4 Boyd Street. Grin

This is likely widowed Rosina in 1901:

Address: 7 Hill Street, Greenock, Renfrewshire
Mrs. Rosina McDonald, head, wid., 50, -, b. Edinburgh

And this one is very interesting. Age of deceased many years out (b. c. 1854) but the names do match, along with the occupations of husband and father. (I also notice Rosina gave her mother's name as Swan on marriage ... Swan/Sweeney? Not too far from each other)

Rosina McDonald, 59, widow of Joseph McDonald, engineer
d. February 16th 1913 at 27 McKinlay Place, Kilmarnock
parents - John Balfour, shoemaker (dec.) and Rosina Balfour m.s. Sweeney (dec.)
registered by William Williams, son-in-law (17th Feb at Kilmarnock)

And as always, best to confirm findings. Smiley Margaret Williams m.s. McDonald died 1942 in Glasgow, aged 64. Parents John McDonald, engineer (dec.) and Rosina McDonald m.s. Balfour (also dec.). Death registered by widower, William Williams.

Thanks for this, it really gets tricky when she changes from Mclachlan to Mcdonald! Sweeny at least gives me a way of going back to Ireland where according to the census records she was born. I'll go and grab those records from SP tonight!
I am also battling to find the death records of John Gowans and Jane Annie - I have all the other records Birth, Marriage children's birth etc.

Later----Jane Annie's marriage certificate has her as McLauchlan again but at the same address as the 1891 census record for Jane McDonald curious I downloaded the image for the census and it's definitely Mcdonald! Wink

Thanks again for your help

Hi Gillian,

Still searching for Rose or Rosina Balfour, nee Swan/Sweeney. Do you have the 1871 census entry for her?

Address: 101 Canongate, Edinburgh, Midlothian
Rosina Balfour, head, wid., 48, greengrocer, b. Ireland Co. Iniskillen

Very lucky to have an Irish parish name. It's as spelt on the image, but I'm betting it's here:

Enniskillen

 Cheesy
Thanks Hume - I had found that one!
Using the McDonald name I have downloaded the records from SP and updated my records.!

I have also located all the census records on ancestry.com . I haven't found her death record or that of her husband John Balfour - I presume he may have died in the poorhouse as there is no trace of him after the 1851 census where he is recorded in the poorhouse. I haven't found a census record for Rosina in 1851 I presume if the kids were in care than she must have been in the poorhouse as well?

Cheers

Well I am still looking for Rosina Balour (nee Swan or Sweeney) death record
I think I have finally found a tantalising record for her in the 1851 cencus where her husband John was in the Poorhouse (and never heard of again) and the children were in care in Tranent, Portobello Farm
I have found a census record for Rose Ann Swan as an Inmate in Edinburgh Prison (had to happen!)
She is on the 1871 census as a grocer in Edinburgh and that is the last that I can find of her.
Any ideas? Have looked for Rosina Balfour on SP born c 1820 no Luck
Regards

Hi Gillian,

As you'll know there's nothing for a Balfour/Swan/Sweeney etc death. However, I did find a death for a Rosina Kay m.s. Swan in 1891. She was married to a Thomas Kay, shoemaker, and died in the Inveresk combination poorhouse. Parents were an unnamed father and a Rosina Swan, m.s. Irvine, both deceased by that time.

I found them in the 1881 census, but I can't see them before that. Thomas and Rosina may have lived together as man and wife without officially marrying? Undecided

Address: 315 High Street, 6 Writers Court, Edinburgh, Midlothian
Thomas Kay, head, mar., 66, shoemaker, b. Haddington
Rosina Kay, wife, mar., 60, -, b. Ireland
Myles McFarlane, lodger, -, 46, pensioner unemployed, b. Haddington

Also found an entry for Rose Ann Balfour on the NAS online catalogue. It's contained in the Edinburgh High Court minute books.

"Rose Ann Balfour, m.s. Swan. Entry relating to the crime of , Petition: Remission of sentence granted under the Great Seal at High Court, Edinburgh, 19 May 1851 (see JC8/59, f.76v)"

No mention of the crime, but I assume it wasn't serious enough for a longer sentence. It can be found using reference JC8/59.

Have you also found the marriage of Rosina Balfour and Bernard McKenney in 1862? Can post details if you need them.

Cheesy

A bit of luck here. I've found Thomas Kay and Rosanna Swan's marriage record (4th September 1876 in Edinburgh). Both were of 215 Canongate, Thomas was 60 and Rosanna 59. Both were widowed, but no mention is given to previous spouses. Rosanna's parents were given as James Swan, brewer (dec.) and Rose Swan m.s. Irvine (also dec.). Witnesses to the marriage were William Kay and Barbara Mortimer.

 Cool

Thanks Hume you are a legend!
I am presuming that Rosina's first husband John died in the poorhouse in Edinburgh. She is single on the 1871 census so I guess Kay is her second marriage. The Rosina Balfour to Bernard McKeeney might be the daughter who later married Joseph Mclauchlan - though her death record doesn't mention a previous marriage - she has an illigitmate daughter Ann on the 1861 census.
Her sisters Ann and Margaret appear on the 1861 census - Margaret in an institution or hospital for sick children and Ann as a servant.

There appears to be a record for a Rosina Kay (Swan) up on SP for a death - will need to buy some more credits to look -(saving up for a few I have to download)
Thanks for this
Regards
