COMPLETED-THANK YOU Parish records & Bastardy reports
« on: Friday 29 May 09 11:41 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone tell me where I can view or possibly purchase the parish records for Wittersham and the bastardy reports covering Tenterden if they exist. I have tried searching but seem to be going round in circles.

My ancestor Charlotte Bradley resided in Wittersham and had 2 illegitimate children at the Tenterden Union workhouse. This would have been around 1847 to 1850. On the 1841 and the 1851 census she was residing in Wittersham. Charlotte later married Jeremiah Murphy who 'adopted' her two children and the family ended up living in Guernsey.

Her mother and father were also, I believe, born in Wittersham c 1780's to 1790's and lived there all their lives except for 1851 census when James Bradley (father) was a pauper at the Tenterden Union Workhouse. He was later back in Wittersham living with another daughter and her family.

I would love to find out more about these ancestors.

If anyone can tell me if where I can find these records I would be extremely grateful.

Thanks

Kim

Although Tenterden Union opened the new workhouse in 1843 having previously used some of the old workhouses within the union mainly the old Tenterden one, the Centre for Kentish Studies seems to only hold records from 1866 onwards.  This would seem to indicate that it is unlikely that anything earlier exists.

Hi David

Thanks very much for that   Smiley

I was looking for records relating to another ancestor in Dorset and searched in the Dorset CC archives for Canford Magna and found some fascinating records relating to all kinds of things including bastardy reports and wondered if there was anything like this for Kent, I can't find anything including as to where the parish records are kept.

As David has said the Parish Records are held at the Centre for Kentish Studies at County Hall Maidstone.  01622 694363

Thank you Lydart and Patrish

I thought David was referring to just the workshouse records

I'll contact them.

Thanks again

You are right I was talking just about the workhouse records.  My rather antiquated records seem to indicate that the parish records for both parishes up to 1860 have been deposited in the Kent County Archives and I think that means that they should be available at the Centre for Kent Studies now.

What would also be interesting is whether they hold any of the other documents from the parish chest.
