Registration of Births - Scotland

After using Scotlands People a number of times attempting to trace Canonbie Armstrongs I have noticed that some birth records included siblings going back a number of years - but all recorded on the same day as the latest child. 

Am I correct in thinking that the registration of births was not compulsory until 1855 and that some births may have escaped been documented at all?

Statutory registration came in in Jan 1855. Before that you have to rely on baptisms of Church of Scotland (Old Parish Records). These are by no means complete.  Also, official registration was not 100% complete.
