Does anyone have any info on Joseph & Maria STAMMERS, part of the extensive Stammers milling family (Suffolk & Essex borders), who appeared in New South Wales in 1829- 1834, and worked a windmill in Sydney called "Suffolk Mill"?
Any information would be great, esp. any details of where he was previously in Suffolk, and how he got to Oz (free passage or transportee).
Many thanks in advance,
Windy Miller

If you are going to the state Library, check out their website first. They have very detailed tutorials which guide you through the process of searching every avenue of your ancestors' journey from the UK to Australia.
There is free access to the general public for a large section regarding transportation and ships incoming, as well as censuses etc, but if you want more specific information - for example doctor's logs from ships - you generally need a library card. It's free for a local, but I don't know how easy it is for a visitor.
If you're after information regarding a mill in Sydney, try the Lands Office, just around the corner from the library:
http://www.lands.nsw.gov.au/about_us/lands_offices
for the address and details.
If you wander down into the bowels of the building they have indexes of title in Sydney, old maps and whatever else you could wish for. You can have printouts of the original documents with signatures (for a fee), though some have been digitised, and I think these are free
Happy Hunting, though you've picked the wrong time of year to come to Sydney
Cheers,
Lewis

Hi Lewis,
I've an Aussie Passport, was there in March, and got a library card! Already to go!
Very useful info on the land office, will have to pop in there, as my main interest in Sydney will be the windmills. My relatives arrive in Rocky (1855) on the Utopia (first boat up the Fitzroy), so off up there to see the old family graveyard in Gracemere, where the Archers had their farm, and where my GGGP's worked to pay-off their passage.
Thanks for the tip, Windy Miller
