WILLIAMS Family
« on: Saturday 30 May 09 13:09 UTC (UK) »

 Huh

I have hit one of those lovely brick walls and would really appreciate some pointers.

Esther Williams, bc 1818 m James Broomfield, her brother, Joseph Williams bc1828 m Mary Broomfield.

I have copies of both marriage certificates. The 'Williams' father is noted as Edward Williams, a builder, I'm fairly certain that he was married to a lady called Elizabeth, but I have nothing else about her.

On one census return, I have found that Esther put her birth county down as Suffolk. And now I'm stuck!

Can any one please point me in the right direction? I would love to find the maiden name of Elizabeth and push my tree back another generation, but I can't get anywhere with this.

Any help and advise will be gratefully received.

What about other censuses? And where does Joseph say he was born on the censuses?

There is an Esther married to a James F in 1861 born Earl Stonham Suffolk. They are living in Southward St George. She seems to live in Newington in other censuses and this place of birth, with spelling variations is given.
Is that her?
Where was Joseph living?

Hi there,
Joseph Williams, on census returns is noted as coming from Southwark, Surrey. His wife, Mary, remarried in 1879 after being widowed.

Ester Williams, where she has noted a place name (as opposed to just a count) on census returns has named Earl Stockham, Suffolk as her birth place. But I can't find any such place on the map, or by googling! Can't find anything close!

I know that old Edward Williams was a builder - but he didn't have to build a brick wall here! All very frustrating. This part of my tree is a key area so I have devoted a lot of time to it but haven't had any success at all.

As you can see, the two couples I have mentioned would have been a brother and sister marrying a sister and brother. My grandmother was descended from Ester and James, and my grandfather was descended from Mary and Joseph! What are the chances of that? It does get more complicated but I would really love to go back another generation if I can. I just don't know where else to go for help!

It should read Earl Stonham so that may help.

Hi Heywood!

Thank you! No wonder I couldn't find her birth place, Earl Stonham - wow. I had never heard of it, and not tried that varient of the spelling! Maybe I can dig a little deeper now!

Thank you both for your help!
