YARDLEY - Local knowledge help please!
« on: Tuesday 19 May 09 10:28 UTC (UK) »

Kia Ora
I am tracking gt granpa's family forwards after he emigrated in 1878- a slow & painful business!

I have just received the death cert of his sister JANE BYRNE who died 11 Hobmoor Croft in Mid Nov 1934. Jane was a widow.

I know the address to be the home of her daughter Eva Mary BAKER  & her husband Charles Alfred BAKER. The informant was her son James Henry BYRNE. He gave his address as 192 Leicester Rd Lonighborough or Loughorough?Huh

My questions are;

1. Where might Jane be buried - presumably with husband James?
2. Is Hobmoor Croft the name of a street & is it close to Leicester Road?
3. Is there any chance anyone could describe the location of the death for me?
4. Eva Mary & Charles moved there between 1930 & 1935 and were still there in 1939.  How can I check later dates?
5. Probably a vain hope - but might  anyone have known the individuals listed above? I think James Henry died in WW2- might be on a Memorial perhaps?

Grateful for any advice!
TIA

Hello Dale,

1. Can't answer this.
2.& 3. Look here for a satellite map of Hobmoor Croft which still exists:http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tab=wl
Hobmoor Croft is in the parish of Yardley, Birmingham, and is probably 25 miles or so from Loughborough which is in Leicestershire. Here is a satellite map of it, but you can change it to a street view if you wish:http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tab=wl
4. Can't help with this.
5. Do you mean died a natural death during the war? or killed in action? If the latter, then his details will be on the CWGC site.

Hope your other queries will be answered by Yardley locals.

regards, Leofric

Many thanks Leofric & Jim1. I am geographically challenged  Embarrassed especially when I  cannot clearly read names on certs!!

To know there is a Loughborough within relatively easy distance is a great help and I shall now check the sites given.

I think my eyesight is going as I did find a James son of James & Jane on the CWGC but when I looked last night - it's gone! So I guess it's back to researching Ancestry for a possible marriage or deaths of James Henry & Eva Mary Baker after 1934.

Thanks for confirming the cemetery Jim.  Gosh it's expensive to search - do they apply the same charges if you turn  up at the gate??? Huh
Cheers and thanks again!

Hi Dale, I called into Yardley cemetery today & asked chap in office if he could direct me to Jane Byrne's grave.  Gave him details as per your posting & he went away to look through records but came back with 'Jane not accepted into Yardley in either November or December 1934'.

Chap suggested contacting other cemeteries in Birmingham by telephone & asking them if Jane is there.  Why Jane isn't in Yardley I'm not sure, but I'll have to pass it back to you to chase up.  I only know of Witton cemetery over Aston way & Brandwood End in Kings Heath, both a fair way from Hobmoor Croft, perhaps Jim or others will know more.

Sorry about that, I really expected a positive result.  Regards, TonyR.

KIA ORA Tony H
How wonderfully kind people like you are! THANK YOU! I have spent nearly 10 years trying to trace forward the family who moved from Alcester about 1874 -the time my great grandparents marriedat Acocks Green!

I too really expected Jane would be at Yardley as 2 sisters and her parents are buried there!

Two things spring to mind which  I would appreciate advice on!

1. Jane was baptised C of E .  She married at St Marys Church Aston Brook. Is that RC or Cof E? Her daughter was baptised 1895 at St Josephs and Jane's name was recorded as Johanna nee Ward, leading me to believe the family the family might have been RC .?

2. If she was RC might that make a difference to her burial place?

3. Is there a special section at Yardley for RC burials or might she be in a nearby Church yard?

I am very grateful, Tony for your help in eliminating Yardley!
Regards
Dale

Just a thought .... If she called herself Johanna on her daughter's b/c might she have been buried as Johanna rather than Jane, and be at Yardley after all?

(This post caught me eye as I also have Yardley ancestors  Wink)

Kia Ora Ruskie
Her daughter's birth cert states mother as Jane as does Jane's death cert - it's just the Baptism of her daughter in 1895 that uses Johanna . I assumed that was because it was Latin in RC church. Father's names was always James but at the Baptism was Jacobi. Huh

IF they were buried in a RC cemetery anything is possible I suppose!

Oh dear I guess I am seeking JANE/JOHANNA & JAMES/JACOBI BYRNE  buried somewhere in Brum!

The nightmares continue and I have yet to find her brothers John & Frederick's deaths Cry let alone their burials!

Hi Dale,

St Joseph was an RC church. St Mary at Aston Brook, was a COE one. Have a look at the following link, it lists all the churches that there is in Birmingham, and what religion they are.

http://www.bham.de/index_churches.html

I would say that the family have converted at one point in time, although, they could have just christened there child there because it was closer? I am not sure if it was as easy to move from COE to RC.

I do not think that there is a RC section at Yardley Cemetery. I have had a look on the site, but cam not find any information about where RC's were buried. It might be best to contact Brandwood End Cemetery (the closet to Yardley), or Witton Cemetery (This is the largest in Birmingham - and I would imagine has a RC plot. They are also the only cemetery in Birmingham that have ever asked me to pay for a search! so be warned, the may ask)

The Ward family to which Jane belonged originated in Kings Coughton anRC stronghold and I know Jane's sister had strong RC connections. My other thought was that I know very little about Jane's husband so perhaps the C of E Marriage was followed by an RC baptism of children to keep the peace?

Thanks for the info about Brandwood and the forewarning of Witton - it helps to be prepared!
Cheers from Aotearoa where the whole nation awaits the outcome of the France V All Blacks Rugby test tonight!
