I`m trying to find Thomas James Boardman, a `doctor of music`, who was born in 1812 in Canterbury, Kent. In 1839 he had a son Henry who was born in Kennington, Surrey and in 1841 another son John was born in Stockwell, Surrey. I can`t find them on the 1841 census - by 1851 they were in Clapham. (His wife was Sarah Maria) Many thanks Jane

Hi Jane
I actually found them this time on FMP, they are badly mistranscribed on Ancestry index.
A little more patience is required in cases like that to find them on Ancestry
It is usually best to search for one of the children, closest in age to the census - Henry b. 1839 Surrey - since there is less room for mistakes, and the 1841 rounding is not in effect Leave out the surname, since that is usually the one wrongly transcribed.
Up comes a longish list - Henry's b. 1839 Surrey - then go down the list til you spot one whose parents are the ones you are looking for

I found them on findmypast too. I find that site a lot more accurate when it comes to the 1841 census.
