I'm looking for more info on my GENTLEs - I've got the info from the NBI but would love to know if there are any gravestones with their names on.

Thanks

Beds Family History Society have the MIs of Stotfold St Marys, surveyed 1914, available on microfiche

http://mysite.verizon.net/brianmpayne/publications.html

I am not sure if a hard-copy is in my library until I get home this evening.

Hello brer Claire;

There is a hard copy & it's here with me ...

The only Gentle that's recorded on the Stotfold, St Mary's MIs is....

Headstone; In loving memory of Esther Gentle, the beloved wife of Reuben Gentle, who died Decembr 31st 1883 aged 33 years. "Why should our tears in sorrow flow,When God recalls his own, and bids them leave a world of woe, for an immortal crown. Her toils are o'er her work is done, She gains her Saviour's breast. She fought the fight the victory won. and entered into rest"

Is this Gentle one of yours ?...

Any other surnames ?

regards John

PS,, I just googled Gentle + Stotfold & got this .,..

http://www.stotfoldtowncouncil.gov.uk/history/burial/list.php

have you seen it ?

Hi

Thanks for this!  Reuben is one of mine but not on my direct line. Cheesy

I know there are lots of GENTLEs there but obviously not with headstones.  The only other names really would be WILSHERE/WILTSHIRE or ROWNEY.

Thanks again

Good find John! A quick look throws up my grandparents, and my uncle who only died 2 years ago.

The cemetery is out of the village, separate from the church, and I wonder if your MI transcript is just for the burials that took place in the church grounds. I think it probably is as the Stotfold site just covers the cemetery which opened in 1898

morning Claire,

Could Rowney be ROWLEY ? there are a couple of them, but there are no Rowney or Wilshere/Wiltshire names listed at St Mary's -  but Rowley & Wilshere/Wilsher appear on the Stotfold Cemetery website.

Also from that site - if you take the link St Marys Church / Tower Grafitti there is a record of J Gentle and C A Gentle being carved in stone !

David - no Coopers at St Mary's unless they were another family name.

BFHS don't have a Stotfold Cemetery MI publication,  the only other is from the Three Counties Asylum - & you're not mentioned in that either . . . . .

cheers John

Hi John

No, my Coopers were at Henlow and Arlesey. My grandparents were the Merrills buried in Stotfold, although they weren't a Stotfold family. The name originated in Potton and then spent  200+ years in Hunts, hence my interest in that county. Popped into the cemetery a couple of years ago on one of my trips back so that Stéphan could see where his real roots lie. Forget about his French half! I also found the grave of one of Dad's sisters - I didn't know she was buried there as she lived in Letchworth.

The article on the vandals was interesting!

It's def ROWNEY not ROWLEY - there was a Rowney GENTLE born in 1796 and he's on the 1841 census with his wife Ann.  I'll look more at the site you've sent - looks very interesting indeed.  I know quite a bit about the GENTLEs of Stotfold some of whom were not so gentle and started the famous Stotfold Riots in 1830 inc my 4xGGrandfather James.

Many thanks again
